President Trump Announces Extension on Social Distancing Guidelines

On Sunday, President Trump announced an extension on nationwide social distancing guidelines at the White House news conference. The extension will now have the quarantine last till April 30. These guidelines include  for people to avoid groups of 10 or more people and for older people to stay at home. He had previously mentioned that the federal social distancing guidelines would possibly end by Easter. We have seen the number of people infected and deaths rise,  as health advisers have warned the President about. President Trump states,"The better you do, the faster this whole nightmare will end." He was previously concerned with how the social distancing would affect the economy, but this new extension is a turnaround from that. He predicts that the United States will be on its way to recovery by June 1, expecting a lot of "great" things to happen. However, many people will be out of a job for more than a month now, taking a big hit as the quarantine gets extended.

  1. Do you think this extension will have much of an effect on the spread of COVID-19?
  2. Do you think the President should extend or lessen the quarantine time?
  3. How do you think those without jobs will be affected by the extension?

  1. I think this extension of the timeline was determined by scientists, people looking at the data and telling the government how to handle this. The timeline should depend on the numbers, right now these numbers are only on the rise. This is enough reason for an extension of the guidelines for as long as they see fit. Although I think they should always be following the suggestions of the medical professionals. Most of the time keeping people inside and away from others does diminish the spread.

  2. I think it is a necessity to extend the quarantine in order to lessen the spread of COVID-19. The extension will definitely help with flattening the curve, and making sure our healthcare system does not get too overwhelmed with this pandemic. It is very likely the quarantine will be extended further to ensure public health and safety.

  3. This extension should help contain the virus as in the US we are still on the upward trend of reported cases. The health of the US people should be the main priority even if it means a loss to the economy. Many have already be let off from their jobs and it is a very unfortunate thing, but it is necessary if we want to keep the people safe and healthy. The economy should be able to get back on its feet in a few months.

  4. I think the extension will have an effect on slowing the spread of Covid 19. Scientists will have more time to develop a cure, if there are less people getting infected daily. I think the President is doing a good job by extending the social distancing, although it could be debatable whether he could do a better job. Those without jobs will be affected in a negative way, because they will find it hard to make money. The government is trying to do some stuff to make sure that people without jobs will not be affected that much

  5. The extension will greatly help to slow the growth of the Corona Virus. At this point we are waiting for the apex to be reached so that we may see the curve. This should happen for California in a round another week or so. People who don't have a job currently are supposed to be getting money for the government. If this goes on for longer than expected it could cause problems for those without jobs because hey may not be able to pay for basic needs.

  6. To answer question 1, I believe that a quarantine, although boring and stressful, will limit the number of COVID-19 victims. This is because extensive human contact is what transmits the virus.

  7. The shelter and place extension will help limit the spread of Coronavirus. At this point in time, it is hard to say how long quarentine will last because tests are still limited and Covid-19 is still spreading. The coronavirus is also negativley affecting our economy because people around the globe are not able to work.

  8. Extending the quarantine until at least the end of April is probably a step in the right direction, at least compared to President Trump's earlier claim that the US would be "open for business by Easter." The more that people adhere to to he guidelines and limit physical contact, the faster this crisis will be over and we can be on our way to recovery. Personally, I believe the quarantine will be later extended until at least the end of May, based on how fast the virus is currently spreading. However, it makes sense that the White House wants to introduce the quarantine as a short-term thing at first and then keep extending it as necessary, as this lessens the chance that the public will panic.

  9. I think that extending the quarantine is a step in the right direction, and will help prevent any further spreading of the virus. I also think that more lives could have been saved if the quarantine was started earlier. I know that the number of reported cases in the US is not accurate due to the lack of testing materials, and I know that in places like New York, the virus has almost reached its peak, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME). Currently, roughly 400 people are dying every day in New York, and those numbers are expected to increase within the next 9 days. It seems very likely that the quarantine could last through the summer in places that have only recently been introduced to the disease. This "varied timing" is mainly due to travel rates (e.g. it's more popular to go visit New York than Wyoming), and further complicates the economic impact of the virus. But in general, I feel like the government is slowly catching up to where it needs to be in order to protect people and ensure public health.

  10. The extension of the guidelines may help us slow the spread because it may help people realize how serious the situation is. Your second question, in my opinion is a little vague. The length of the quarantine period is dependent on the spread of the virus. If it is increasing or decreasing. I think that we can only stop the quarantine if we have a vaccination or a "cure". We have already seen what the Corona Virus is doing to jobs and businesses. The stock market is not doing so well, and the only businesses that can be open are businesses deemed "essential" this means that other businesses may have to let a few people go.

  11. I do think that extending the social distancing guidelines will help the spread of the virus go down but as of now, it's really the country's best option as there hasn't been any cure found for Covid-19. I think that extending the guidelines was the right decision as the entire situation keeps getting worse with more people getting infected and more fatalities are occurring every day. At this point, it really depends on the people to follow these guidelines and limit social distancing because it's the only way to fix this issue quicker.

  12. This extension of social distancing guidelines will definitely decrease the spread of Covid-19 and help flatten the curve so hospitals aren't overwhelmed with patients. If there are too many infected people and not enough hospitals, there will be an increased amount of deaths, which we want to avoid. I don't think the President should lessen quarantine time but he should think about extending it based on what the situation is like on April 30.

  13. The extension of guidelines is definitely going to help slow the virus, only if everyone complies to these guidelines. The more they are ignored, the longer they will have to be extended. Because of this nationwide quarantine, our economy is being terribly affected, as thousands of people are losing jobs. It seems like a majority of students are unhappy with the fact that the duration of online school keeps getting extended. Many large events are getting cancelled, causing even more dissatisfaction among people. Quarantining is not very ideal for most of our daily lives, but it is currently the best thing we can do to prevent spreading. The more people that follow social distancing guidelines, the sooner this quarantine will be over.

  14. Extending the quarantine is probably the best step we can take to prevent the virus from spreading even more and becoming worse than it already is. I also think that the quarantine should have started sooner, or that faster testing for the virus should have happened, as it could have lessened the spread of the virus and the death count. Those without jobs would probably be affected by the extension, as many people are already out of a job, and more small businesses and workers might have to stop because of the lack of income.

  15. I think that social distancing is having a huge impact on the spread of the disease and hopefully the peak will be coming soon. I do believe that the country cannot be shut down for more than three months though, which is about when shelter at home is predicted to end, because of the impact it is having on people's jobs. So many people are unemployed and don't have a paycheck coming in and many small businesses won't be able to survive through quarantine.

  16. I think that an extension is truly needed to ensure the safety of the people. Since there is still no known cure for the virus, the best we can do at the moment is distance ourselves from others, there will be no need to make quarantine shorter if it is for safety.

  17. Social distancing has had a major impact on the spread of Coronavirus. Gavin Newsom of California was the first to begin this act of social distancing and it has led to great progress in limiting the spread of the coronavirus. Because California started early, it has gotten better and better with less cases spreading compared to some other places like New York. While people without jobs may begin to feel stressed, there are methods which the government has of maintaining regular life in this time of crisis. Everyone is doing their best to prevent the spread and social distancing is one of the great announcements which have stopped the spread. Examples of not following social distancing, such as going out during spring break, caused many to suffer from spreading in the large crowds which congregated.

  18. I think the president should extend quarantine. It is absolutely necessary to stop the spread of coronavirus and it is better to extend it than for people to die unnecessarily. It is also needed for people to see the seriousness of this problem and if the quarantine is extended people might finally be able to grasp the situation we are in.

  19. I believe that the Trump should extend the quarantine and social distancing. This will result in less inter action with people and that can lessen the spread of Covid-19. Ideally, people who have lost their job should have some sort o income, whether thats filling for unemployment or from the job that they were working at.
