Good News on COVID-19 Pandemeic

A female nurse holds up a test tube full of blood with a label that says 2019 nCoV.

On Tuesday March 11th, good news emerged from Wuhan, China, the origin of the COVID-19 outbreak. That day, China reported only 19 new cases, 17 in Wuhan, indicating that the spread of the virus in China is slowing down. These significant drops from days before have surprised many, especially considering the recent boom in new cases in other countries. Though other countries are feeling this pandemic worse every day, good news in China is important. The outbreak started there, and for the situation in that location to be improving perhaps gives hope that other locations will follow the same pattern. Not only that but it proves that measures that China have taken to get over this pandemic, such as their unprecedented lockdown policy, are ones that might bring success, and they can act as a model for other countries to follow. There were 14 temporary hospitals established in Wuhan to help deal with the outbreak, and they have been able to close 11 of them. Perhaps more striking, President Xi Jinping visited Wuhan on Tuesday, symbolizing and proving the progress they have made. The effects of this reach far as well, China's economy is making a comeback, as companies are beginning to resume normal operation. As always, a strong Chinese economy is good for the whole world, as they play such a big role, and this rebound gives hope to the recently struggling US economy.

  • Does the potential success of China's lockdown policy make up for other consequences it has come with?
  • Should other countries more closely follow in China's footsteps to contain the outbreak?
  • Will other countries find the same successful recovery that China has? Or does anything make China a special case?

  1. I think other countries should follow china in containing the outbreaks in their countries. If other developed countries take preemptive measures to mitigate the spread of the virus before a wide spread infection happens as it did in Iran and Italy. I don't think all countries will have the same successful recovery that China has because not all governments have the capability that the Chinese government has.

  2. I definitely think that stopping to spread of the virus is important, despite the consequences that come with lock downs. China obviously has had it the worst when it comes to the Corona Virus, and so it is understandable to have China go into lock down. But some countries might want to consider this policy when it comes to stopping the spread of the virus.

  3. I think, in terms of the recovery rate, other countries must constantly put in the most effort in trying to prevent the spread of the disease until it has almost completely died down. The success rate of this all depends on how well the country is keeping up with the prevention. China, using the lock down policy, was very strict and forced citizens to be attentive to all orders. It could make china a "special case" depending on how one views it, but for now all we can do is hope that other countries' spread of the disease will decrease as well.

  4. In my opinion, in order to decrease the spreading of the coronavirus, other countries should take similar protocols as China. Though it may have consequences, the benefits of less sick people of this virus is more important. Also, stabilizing the outbreak allows more time to come up with a vaccine to prevent COVID-19. In all, we should attempt to take similar steps to China.

  5. I think that China's lockdown policy definitely helps with the whole chaotic mess and helps to slow the spreading of the Coronavirus. Countries should also follow what China has done because lockdowns do help to prevent the Coronavirus from speading more and more everyday. It believe that other countries will also have the same success as China, if they choose to do this.

  6. Yes,I believe that other countries should follow China to contain the coronavirus outbreak. The good news in China gives the world hope that it is possible to control the virus, and an example for other countries to follow. Other countries will hopefully find the same successful recovery as China, but may take a longer amount of time if they lack the amount of resources to.

  7. I hate to say it, but if we want this virus to become contained as fast as possible, I think that this is what is needed for our country. Though, now we do know and have in the back of our heads that the virus can be contained. I believe that this now means we are one step closer to finally waking up from this nightmare which is the corona virus. Good news, but we still have a long way to go if we want to get where we want around the globe.

  8. Other countries should definitely follow China's footsteps in containing the virus. One of the reasons containment is so successful in China is because since the outbreak originated there first, it was much more serious in China than it was in any other country- this drove China to put an extended lockdown in place. By quarantining affected areas (eg. Wuhan), China was able to stop the virus from spreading. In the US, the outbreaks are not concentrated to specific regions, so it'd be difficult to know what areas to place under lockdown, but if no type of quarantine is enforced, the virus will only continue to spread in America.

  9. Yes, other countries should follow China and try to contain the coronavirus. It is very important to contain so others don't get sick, especially those who don't have a strong immune system,. Hopefully other countries will be successful.

  10. 3. I believe that other countries will find a great deal of struggle in their attempts to emulate China's response to the virus. Despite a slow start to combatting the virus, they managed to compensate for their lag with rapid mobilization. In order for other nations to recover at similar speeds, it is necessary to recognize the threat. Sadly, many nations, including the US and Iran have permitted the outbreak to spread, further stretching the need for recovery. China managed to build 2 hospitals in 10 days in order to treat those infected with COVID-19, and Italy responded to their own outbreak with total isolation. The likelihood of the US following suit is extremely low.

  11. 3. Other countries will probably find it harder to combat Covid-19, because of the fact that even though they know that the virus is everywhere, they have not put too many travel bans in place, and it is still quite lax. However, schools have been shut down in the county, so they are at least trying to find a solution.

  12. In my opinion, other developed countries should follow the steps as China did. Though containment might not fully happen, it is critical to start implementing actions into every country so that everyone is safe. Not every country will have it as easy as China but they should try to impede it from spreading by responding to the virus as quick as possible.

  13. I believe that many countries are doing the same as China in order to contain the outbreak. The USA is a perfect example as many of us are out of school and are quarantined for the specific reason of not spreading the Corona Virus. Italy was an example of what would happen when people didn't quarantine themselves. The virus spread like a wildfire and was able to infect a lot of people, causing even worse consequences to come up. So, yes, China's method of handling this through quarantine is correct as we have seen both sides of the spectrum.

  14. I think that other countries should really try to follow what China chose to do with their country. China went into a full lockdown which at the time sounded extreme, but was what was needed to fight covid-19 and try to get rid of it all together and the decline of new cases shows that it worked. I don't think anything makes china especially special so I believe and hope that other countries, especially the US, recovers fast and that covis 19 goes away.

  15. Other countries should try to follow China's protocol for preventing the spread of the virus. The lockdown makes it harder for the virus to spread rapidly and keeps it mostly contained in one place. With this tactic, the amount of cases will go down, and it will take us one step closer to the epidemic being over.

  16. I think that health is more important than anything else so the positives of the protocol out weigh the negatives. Other countries should do what China's doing to keep things under control. If other countries do this I believe they will see the same results soon.

  17. Although the extensive lockdown has proved advantageous and effective in containing the coronavirus to a large extent in China, we also have to acknowledge that China's numbers aren't accurate ones. Combined with the shortage of testing kits and strict government censorship, we likely won't ever know how many deaths or cases there really are in China. Nonetheless, it is critical that we follow in China's footsteps and comprehend the severity of the outbreak. We need to stop putting our selfish desires at the forefront and need to acknowledge that anyone could be infected. Implementing lockdown policies like the ones in China will help us contain the virus.

  18. A lot of people in the comments are stating that other countries should follow China’s lead; however, with China’s history of censorship in media and encouraging certain news to be spread, it could be suspected that President Xi Jinping is faking the fact that the spread of the CoronaVirus has slowed down significantly in China. China chose to keep the existence of the CoronaVirus under wraps for a whole month before informing the rest of the international community, and Hong Kong protestors are clearly angry at China’s poor response in such a crisis situation, while there is mass hysteria overall. It is hard to approve of the idea that countries should follow in China’s footsteps when China has certainly not been impressive, being highly delayed with their lockdown policy and also very occupied with creating fake news that the CoronaVirus was a biochemical weapon made by the U.S.
