Olympics Have to be Postponed After Corona Virus Outbreak

Image: Tokyo Olympics

The Corona Virus outbreak has become a global pandemic over the last two weeks and has slowly caused everything to get canceled. Now one of if not the biggest sporting events in the world has also been postponed till at least the summer of 2021. This was decided by Japans Prime Minister and the President of the International Olympic committee on Tuesday. They made this decision after some countries like Canada said that they would not participate in the games unless it was postponed until the Corona Virus spread started to slow down. The Olympics were some peoples last hope, wanting them to still happen this summer to give them something to look forward too and get excited for. This is the first time that the Olympics have been postponed for something other than a War which happened in 1960, 1940, and 1944.

Questions:

1.  Do you think that the games will have to postponed again?

2.  In the future, do you think the Olympics will get postponed due to more things like this and or related to global warming?

3. Should they have continued with the games as scheduled as a beacon of hope for people to look forward too?

  1. I think the games will have to be postponed again. Given our current situation and the fact that several surrounding countries have been hit hard with this pandemic, it would be wise for government officials to prevent the biggest gathering of international representatives. I do believe the Olympics will probably be postponed due to more circumstances such as this widespread virus because our world experiences several bumps in the road that cause complications, especially for large gatherings such as the Olympics. I don't think it would be a good idea to continue the games as scheduled to serve as a beacon of hope to people because although I do believe it is important for citizens to maintain hope, I believe everyone's safety must be ensure before further discussion.

  2. While nobody can say for sure if the games will be postponed again, it should be noted that past pandemics have typically lasted between 12 and 36 months, and especially with the social distancing movement that has been encouraged or forced in some regions, it will only slow the spread of the disease, meaning that overall the pandemic will probably last even longer. In the future, the games are bound to be postponed due to other global issues such as wars or pandemics like this. They definitely shouldn't have continued with the games because athletes would not be prepared because of social distancing, thousands of people would be put at risk in the large crowds, and many officials that should be working there would not be available to work because of travel restrictions, health concerns, or other factors, so it was just a better solution overall to postpone the games.

  3. Responding to question 3, they should not continue the games at all. What can be a beacon of hope can also become a symbol of destruction, because the virus can spread more easily at mass gatherings. It only takes one person to spread the virus, so keeping people away from the games is very important. However, one solution could be to air the games live on TV, but keep the stadium empty of spectators and only bring the essential staff to help athletes while they participate in the games.

  4. The Olympic Committee made the right choice to postpone the Olympics. Although it could be beneficial to have the games, it would have a much larger negative consequence. If someone went to the games and had the Corona Virus they could spread it to others. Then those infected could bring it back to their home country. Therefore making the pandemic worse. This is uncharted territory for the entire world. Nobody knows exactly how many will be affected or how long it will take to stop the pandemic. It is the best to be proactive to these issues rather than being reactive.

  5. I do not think the Olympic games will be postponed past summer of 2021 considering it is early 2020; as for the future of the Olympic games I don’t think there’s anyway we can actually know if they will ever get postponed again due to a pandemic or anything related to global warming I hope not but we don’t really know. I think that postponing the games was a good idea considering everything that’s going on right now, I understand how they can be seen as that beacon of hope but right now the thing that everyone needs to pay attention to is what’s happening with the COVID-19 pandemic.

  6. I have no idea whether the games will be postponed again. It is all dependent on how the coronavirus continues to spread or if it clears up. I think that climate change will definitely impact the Olympics and other events. While these cancellations are devastating, the effects of climate change will destroy our planet. Hopefully, the possible cancellations of these events due to climate change will spark climate change deniers to take action. They should not keep the games as planned because it is major health risk and its not worth the likely devastating consequences. The mental health of many during this quarantine is being affected so I think there should be something else to look forward to get through these tough times.

  7. I do not think the Olympics will be postponed a second time unless the Corona Virus is still is as strong as it is now. If it is, they will cancel it because the schedule will be messed up too much. It is very likely that the Olympics will be cancelled due to other events in the future because global warming is a very real reality right now and cannot be prevented. Conditions may eventually get worse enough that we will not be able to g outside so things like the Olympics will get cancelled.

  8. For something as massive an event as the Olympics, I do not think the Olympics will be postponed again strictly because of the implications it would have in the future. Pushing back the Olympics too much from its original schedule would disrupt the event moving forward, to the point where it would also affect other sports league schedules, such as the NBA or the MLS. However, I feel that pushing back the 2020 Olympic games is something that has to be done whether it is favored or not just because of how much damage COVID-19 has already caused, as well as the potential blows it would deal to our world's health, economy, and many other factors.

  9. I think that the games will have to postponed again due to the current pandemic that doesn't have a cure as of yet and most likely will rising cases as they won't be able to find a cure until next year minimum. In the future, most likely the Olympics will not get postponed.

  10. I don't think that the games will be postponed in the future due to global warming. I think that they will instead be moved to cities away from coastal areas, so rising water levels aren't a factor. The winter olympics has adapted to a lack of snowfall by making fake snow, so the olympics are likely to carry on regardless of natural conditions. Pandemics, however, can delay the olympics.

  11. I do not think that the olympic games would be postponed again. In the summer of 2021 I feel that we might have stopped the spread of the virus and have found a cure or a vaccination for it. I don't think that the games will be cancelled due to global warming or other climate changing events. The only reason why it is being postponed right now is because of the corona virus, which they are trying to stop the spread of, and not have mass gatherings of people. I think the olympics could be seen as a beacon of hope, but the Corona Virus is cancelling a lot more things that people look forward to, things as small as the high school spring sports season.

  12. It is currently unclear how long this pandemic will last, so it is hard to know whether it will be postponed further. In the future, I think it is likely that the olympics would be postponed at some point, given that there will always be issues. However, I don't think that it would be cancelled for something like global warming. I believe that they made the right choice to postpone the olympics, because even if it is a beacon of hope, it is very important to prevent the spread of the virus. It is also serving as an example for people to understand the severity of the situation if something as big as the olympics isn't happening.

  13. i think they made the right choice to postpone the games because I don't think it would be a good idea to continue the games to serve as a beacon of hope for people because it's important to prevent the virus from spreading even more.

  14. I doubt that the Olympics will have to be postponed because recently the majority of people have been good about staying indoors and it's been shown that the number of people being infected has gone down. With this being said, I doubt that the virus will still be as severe by 2021 to the point where the Olympics have to be cancelled again.

  15. The olympics are most likely going to be postponed again. Yes our lives will eventually return to normal and we will be able to go out in our communities (after a while),,, but having millions of people from around the globe fly into one city when Corona is still active! That's stupid and irresponsible. And its unlikely corona will be cleared up enough world wide by 2021 for it to be safe.

  16. At this point in time it is hard to say if the games will be postponed again. I think it would be innapropriate not to postpone the games because it will be extremely dangerous and unhealthy for all athletes and spectators.

  17. I don't think the games will have to be postponed again considering that many nations are working hard to find a vaccine/cure for coronavirus. It is definitely possible that the games will be postponed in the future, but obviously no one knows for certain. No one can predict the future, but they can make educated guesses. Many countries are working towards stopping and fixing global climate change so I don't think it will get too much farther out of hand. I don't think it would have been smart to continue the games since there would have been too many people at the games from so many different countries in constant close proximity that it would've been nearly impossible to prevent a quick spread of coronavirus within the Olympic Arena.

  18. No, I don't think that the games should have continued as a beacon of hope for people because it puts many at risk for contracting the corona virus. I am not even sure if the games will happen this year because of the risks. We may have to wait until 4 years from now for the next scheduled olympics.

  19. I do not think the games will be postponed any further or that they should have continued with them. It could have put many at risk including the athletes. I also hope that we will learn from our mistakes and also that things will move up from here and having games postponed wont need to happy. I also do not believe global warming would postpone games considering that has been happening for years.

  20. I think that this rescheduling of a great event such as the olympics really highlights depth and sincerity of this situation. I think that it definitely would not have been the right decision to continue the games as any symbol or anything of the sort, the only message that an action such as that would send was the repeated message of global leaders not knowing what they are doing. We can only hope that as this situation gets worse more and more people begin to wake up and do their part to amend it.

  21. The Olympics will not be postponed further unless there is another major disaster or disease. If Covid-19 is still a threat by the summer of 2021, we will all be dead anyways. It is possible that the Olympics may be postponed or cancelled due to climate change or another major event. People should be the top priority for the Olympics and saving lives should be more valued than the actual Olympics. They should not have continued with the Olympics as a beacon of hope because it would quickly become a disaster as more and more people get infected. According to this article: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/27/world/coronavirus-news.html, the US has more cases than any other country. Just a couple of weeks ago the number was below 100. This goes to show how quickly the virus spreads and putting so many people together would be disastrous.

  22. I don't think that the Olympic games will be postponed again after this unless something with similar magnitude as coronavirus occurs again. Even though the Olympics gave athletes participating in the games and spectators something to look forward to, I think that it was the right decision to postpone the games. Public safety should be the number one priority when it comes to large events like this and continuing with the Olympics could have put a lot of people at risk.

  23. I believe that postponing the games was the right idea as the virus, as seen by our current situation, is extremely dangerous and can be easily spread. The gathering of all the world's countries into one area just seems like a way to spread the virus through the entire world. Postponing the games is disappointing for sure, however it is better to postpone the games than risk the safety of this entire world.

  24. I think that the Olympics may be postponed again depending on what the situation is like next year. Since it is very fast spreading and contagious, it only takes one person to infect everyone, so if the situation is still as bad as it is right now, they should postpone it again. Although many countries are working on a vaccine, it is probably not going to be out for another year and half. I think it was smart to postpone it because although it provides some hope, it would have led to the sickness and death of hundreds of thousands of people.

  25. I don't think that the Olympics will be postponed again due to the Covid-19. However, I think it was the right decision to postpone the event especially due to the huge amount of people that attend the event from around the world. Although it is a beacon of hope for people to look forward to, I think that it is unreasonable to risk people's health just for entertainment.

  26. I think that the Olympics will almost certainly be postponed again. While it may not be for COVID-19 again, once the precedent of postponing the games is set, it is much easier to bring a case to postpone them. Overall, I believe that it was the right decision, but who knows what the future of the games will now look like.

  27. I believe that in the future, we will see issues like this arise again and the Olympics will have to be postponed. While people saw this as their beacon of hope, it doesn't mean the Olympics are cancelled, simply pushed back until it will be safe for people to watch and participate, so they can enjoy it to its full extent. I believe this was the right decision in the long run, as the Olympics is such a large scale event that if someone who contracted the virus unknowingly attended, it could affect thousands of other attendees and continue the spread.

  28. I think that the virus will get increasingly bigger and push the olympics back even farther. I don't think global warming would impact the date of a sporting event directly but I could see this happening with another virus. No, it would have been unsafe to keep the games going.

  30. In the future I do think that the games will get postponed again, yet we don't know for sure. Given our current situation everything has to be cancelled for the upcoming months because doctors don't know when there will be a cure. For everyone's safety as well, the decision to postpone the Olympics was a safe choice. I don't think that the Olympics will get postponed due to global warming as that is still a big issue, it relates more to our atmosphere and the weather, and with most of the sports and activities played in the summer is won't have as great of an effect as a pandemic. I do think that they should still schedule the Olympics for the future as it does give some hope to the athletes and viewers.

  31. The Olympics will most likely be pushed back again because of the virus, but nothing is certain. People seeing the Olympics as a beacon of hope is not a good enough reason to continue with the Olympics. There are contestants from all over the world, and if someone with the virus attended, the virus could spread among contestants, and even between the viewers present. There have also been many other sports have also been postponed or cancelled due to the virus.

  32. I think that the Olympics will be pushed back again due to the outbreak being so severe. I believe that it was right of them to push it back and not have the Olympics. If they had the games, it would have spread the virus more, and more people would be sick with this virus.

  33. I think the Olympics will have to be pushed back. Right now, sports and athletics shouldn't be any sort of main focus until it is made clear that our number of cases and deaths are going down. So instead of focusing on sports, finding a cue for the virus should be the main focus since it as an affect on the whole world

  34. The Olympics may serve as a beacon of hope, but it is also highly costly, so I doubt that the country that was supposed to host it this year would want to, considering the high economic toll the CoronaVirus has taken. In addition, the gathering of so many people in one place only spells trouble; it creates a pot for CoronaVirus to be spread among a mass number of people. I would not be surprised if the Olympics gets postponed again due to CoronaVirus. Pandemics do not just leave within a year; we will likely be still feeling the effects of CoronaVirus for years from now.

  35. I think the games being postponed was absolutely necessary in order to ensure that people remain safe during this pandemic. I don't think they'll have to be postponed later than summer of 2021 because hopefully things will have calmed down by then, but only time will tell and if there is still a pandemic then, the games may have to be postponed even further or even cancelled.

  36. It is clear to me that the Olympic Games couldn't possibly take place due to safety concerns. As an international competition, there is no point in holding the event without a crowd and doing so with people would be ridiculous. Therefore, it wouldn't make sense to continue with the event for the originally scheduled period. Not only would the competition be far less celebratory and more somber than in the past, but the competition would be hindered by the lack of supporters. For the health of all people and satisfaction of fans, I believe that the event's postponement was the right decision.

  37. In response to your last question, I personally feel like Japan and the Olympic committee made a responsible and respectable decision to postpone the Olympic games. Japan has helped keep all the athletes and their home counties safe and healthy too.
