UNESCO condemned President Trump's threat to target Iranian cultural sites if Iran retaliates for last week's killing of Qassem Soleimani. Trump justified attacks of cultural sites by referencing Iranian use of roadside bombs, but the Iranian Foreign Minister said such attacks would be a war crime. Iran has 22 "cultural sites" with two of them on the UNESCO World Heritage list, however the U.S. withdrew from UNESCO in 2019. The most famous site in Iran is Persepolis (pictured above) which has been in Southwest Iran for the past 2,500 years.
Discussion Questions
1. Should the U.S. be obligated to respect cultural sites in Iran if war broke out, given the U.S. withdrawal from UNESCO last year?
2. What would be a justified Iranian response to the killing of Soleimani?
3. Should the U.S. Congress support or oppose President Trump's aggression against Iran?
