Kobe Bryant Passes Away

Over the weekend, American Basketball legend Kobe Bryant, widely known as the “Black Mamba”, passed away at 41, along with his 13 year old daughter, Giana Bryant, and 7 other passengers.  Kobe and the other passengers were flying in his private helicopter, headed to Thousand Oaks for a basketball game, where Giana and 2 other girls on the helicopter were expected to play, with Kobe coaching. The helicopter experienced some sort of malfunction while in flight which led to the crash. The malfunction is still trying to be identified by the LAPD to get a better understanding of what actually happened. The helicopter went down just before 10am on Sunday morning in Calabasas. Kobe spent all 20 seasons of his NBA career with the Las Angeles Lakers, becoming a 5 time NBA champion, 2 time finals MVP, 18 time all star, with many more accomplishments outside of his basketball career. He was a father of 4 girls and a husband to Vanessa Bryant. Kobe Bryant was an inspiration to not only Lakers fans, not even only basketball fans, but he was looked up to by people all over the globe. He became a symbol of dedication to ones craft to millions. He helped inspire an entire generation of athletes to reach for new heights and to never give up on their dreams. This year, he was finally going to become eligible for the Basketball Hall of Fame and was widely expected to be inducted. Kobe’s death was a tragedy that came too soon for him, his family, and his fans. And his death will be mourned by millions across the world.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Will the NBA hold any sort of memorial or event to commemorate Kobe’s legacy? If so, what?
  2. How will Kobe’s legacy remembered by future athletes?
  3. With Kobe’s sudden passing, what new views do you have on the reality that someone can be taken from us at any time?

  1. Many teams have agreed on taking a 24 shot clock violation and a 8 second backcourt violation to honor Kobe's two numbers he wore during his time playing. During the Grammys which were held at Staples Center, many fans were outside laying flowers and dealing with the loss. Kobe was able to inspire many NBA players and a lot of them were hurt by his loss. They knew him as an amazing basketball player and a family man. My views stay the same on life and death. Life is a very precious thing and cannot be taken for granted. Although his death is very heartbreaking, death comes for everyone eventually.

  2. Not only have teems taken shot clock violations, but now many players have agreed on a non-official retirement of jersey numbers 8 and 24 in honor of Kobe's greatness.

  3. Responding to question #3:
Kobe's death has brought many people and new insight on life. The way he passed was abrupt, it did not happen for a reason or a cause, it just happened. That fact alone serves as a reminder to people like myself that life can be taken away from us any second of any day. Every moment you have, every single second on this Earth should be enjoyed because sooner or later it won't be here anymore. There will be nothing to experience for you, an absolute nothingness. Think about before you were born. Do you remember what that was like? No. And that is likely what death will be, if religions are not accounted for. Knowing this, knowing that we are at the mercy of unpredictable fate, we should utilize our time here to be happy people. No wasting time with useless negativity, just be content and happy.

  4. Kobe left such an enormous legacy for many, but especially athletes. He was an inspiration to both current and aspiring athletes with his ambition, hardworking attitude, and focus to be "the best that he could be." I believe that through the memory of how he lived his life, Kobe will continue to be remembered.
Kobe's sudden passing has really opened people's eyes to how life can't be taken for granted. Many, including myself, never would have thought that Kobe would pass away so soon. Magic Johnson even said, "I thought he was going to live forever." With this, people should value the time they have with the people they care about, because we never know when someone will be taken from us. We should simply live a happy life that when the time comes, we can be content.

  5. Kobes legacy as an amazing basketball player inspires many around the globe. I have no doubt that the NBA will hold a formal memorial to recongize his hard work, drive and focus. Kobe will be remembered not only as an impressive athlete but also as a caring father that did everything for his family. Kobe coached and owned a basketball club named Mamba where he motivated younger players to be the best versions of themselves.

  6. Kobe's extremely unexpected death has taught me that no matter how many people you inspire, how much you do for the world, or how many people look up to you, life can be taken away from you at any moment. Both Kobe and his 13-year old daughter undoubtedly had a bright future ahead of them and so much more of their lives to live, yet this was all destroyed in just one single moment. With that being said, life is extremely precious and tomorrow is never promised. Not only did Kobe and Gigi's passing give me new outlooks on life, but also the passing of all 7 other victims that were riding on that helicopter. This includes one of Gigi’s teammates, Alyssa Altobelli, and both of her parents. Alyssa had two other siblings (not on the helicopter), meaning that two people just lost both their parents and their sister; It is hard for me to even imagine what it’s like to be in the shoes of the victims’ families. We cannot take our lives or our loved ones for granted because we don’t know when they will be taken away from us

  7. Many teams have already done things to honor kobe's legacy. This includes taking 24 second violations, changing their jersey numbers and wearing kobe jerseys before the game starts. TnT even held a special program where his closest friends honored his life and told stories about his life. His legacy can be carried on by the NBA changing their logo to a silhouette of him. There is already a petition with around 3 million signatures to get it done.

  9. In my opinion, the NBA will definitely hold a memorial in order to honor Kobe Bryant. He was such an integral part of the NBA, on and off the court and so many people looked up to him that honoring him in such a way seems necessary. Additionally, the reality that someone can be taken away at any time definitely puts life into perspective and it makes the little things feel that much more special.

  10. All over the country, teams, players, and fans are honoring Kobe including displaying colors of his team, leaving flowers, and taking 8 and 24 second violations. The NBA even cancelled on of the Lakers games after his sudden death. This alone shows is legacy and impact on the world as all the people that he has touched are showing their thanks to what he was accomplished.

  11. The news of Kobe Bryant's death came as a shock to everyone who was alerted to it as he was so young and prosperous and one never thought that someone like him could die at the young age of 41. This gives many a new perspective on death, especially with the chance of WWIII being around the corner and the outbreak of the corona virus. People will likely be more grateful for the people they have in their lives and not take for granted every moment they have in their lives because they now realize that people can be there one moment and gone the next. As shocking as this thought is, it is one that must happen in order for people to appreciate all that they own and live life to the fullest. I feel that more individuals will realize this and take their lives into their own hands and not waste so much time doing things that don't have an impact and begin making memories.

  12. Kobe's death was a shock to everyone, and across the NBA, the players let the 24-second shot clock or the 8-second violation run down to honor his number and legacy. I think various ceremonies will be held throughout the next year to commemorate Kobe, especially given that he was more than just a basketball player. However, with most public figures comes some drama, as "The Complicated Legacy of Kobe Bryant," by NPR, describes, and Kobe was accused of sexual assault in 2003. Although the details are uncertain, it is important now to balance both raising this incredible athlete and human on a pedestal, while still condemning these actions he made earlier in his life.

  13. The death of Kobe was a huge shock to everyone who's ever threw a piece of paper in a trash can. Kobe will have many ceremonies because he had such a big impact on everyone

  14. Kobe’s legacy will be remembered forever; he was a very famous figure in the basketball world, being an international inspiration for millions of athletes over the globe. Already, taking eight and twenty-four second violations, as well as altered jersey numbers, have been put in place in his honor, and there are likely more changes to come. Additionally, today, it was announced that there will be a candlelight vigil at the African American Civil War Memorial to commemorate Kobe’s legacy, as held by the National Black United Front and ANC 8C Commissioner Salim Adofo. There may be up to thousands of attendees bringing white candles along with them. His sudden passing will serve as a reminder that we must appreciate our idols and important people in our lives while we have them because the day will come when they are only immortalized in memory.

  15. People everywhere in the country and even across the world are mourning Kobe's death, recalling their fondest memories and how he shaped them and helped inspire so many. Right now, thousands of people in Los Angeles have come to commemorate him at Staples Center, and even now at his home as well, placing down flowers and candles in his memory. The NBA did pay their respects to Kobe, with players on the teams taking 24 and 8 second shot clock violations for the numbers he wore on his jersey throughout his career, and also the game in Los Angeles between the Clippers and Lakers was postponed due to his passing. Kobe's legacy will definitely be remembered as he was one of the most humble, accomplished, and talented athlete and person, and provided so much hope for aspiring players, establishing his own academy and after his retirement making his film "Dear Basketball." His sudden passing definitely made me think how easily life can be lost and how many unfortunate circumstances can occur leading to that. It also makes you want to appreciate what you have, and the people you know when they are alive, and appreciate their work and contributions to the world.

  16. As news of Kobe's death spread, many people who knew him well shared their fondest memories of being with him. Some shared that they had plans to work with him and felt that his life was cut short. This should serve as a reminder that we should spend as much time as we can with the people around us and even those that live far away, because we never know when their life might be cut short like Kobe's.

  17. There is a petition to change the NBA logo in honor of him and Gigi. This incident made many realize that life could end at any moment and to always tell your family and friends that you love them because you never know when you'll see them last. I'm sure that the NBA will hold some sort of memorial to honor not only him and his daughter but the other 7 who died in the crash as well.

  18. I think this passing of such a memeorable and amazing athlete will be hard to swallow for so many people. People don't expect great people like this to ever die so out of the blue. I think we we will all learn that it is important to cherrish every moment with our loved ones because you never know when something so bad will happen so abruptly.

  19. Many people were depressed once knowing this news. People all over the world has been sending their prayer, through Instagram, twitter, and all sorts of social media. Even those who were not basketball players, showed respect towards him. For example, Sergio Ramos, a soccer player for Real Madrid, wore his US jersey to practice and had the team do a one minute silence to honor this legend. This horrible event proves to everyone that anything can happen, and instead of grieving off of it, people should try and move on and use it as a lesson to learn.

  20. I think the NBA will have some sort of ceremony at the Staples Center or in the city of Los Angeles. Many fans have already begun recognizing him outside the Staples center and others have showed their support. Kobe"s legacy will be remembered as one of the goat's in the NBA. Athletes and others were influenced by him and he will always be remembered for that. I have always known the possibilities of sudden loss, but Kobe's death shocked me. It has taught me to not take things for granted and to enjoy life the best that I can.

  21. Many fans left flowers and drawings for Kobe at the Staples Center. There is also a petition going around to change the NBA logo from Jerry West to Kobe Bryant.

  22. The reality of Kobe Bryant's passing is tough to accept for everyone especially the people who have watched him all their lives. The NBA is definitely going to hold ceremonies to commemorate one of the best to ever play the game. The legacy which Kobe leaves behind is one which many players still have inspire them to this day. His untimely passing shows the possibility that not everyone's life is safe. People hearing about this tragic story will truly come to see that life can be cut short sometimes even when it may seem like you're on top of the world.

  23. Kobe Bryant's death serves as a stark reminder that everything is fragile and temporary. The utter unpredictability of the future tugs at us to cherish every day and every person in our lives, because tomorrow is full of uncertainty.
