Protesters Storm Tehran to condemn Iranian Government for Denying Passenger Plane Attack

On Wednesday, January 8th, 2020, a Ukrainian passenger plane en route from Iran to Ukraine was gunned down by the Iranian military without warning. A mix of 176 Iranians, Canadians, and Ukrainians died. In response, official Ayatollah Khamenei said that “There was proof of human error'' and promises to invest in military security, which international leaders have condemned. Iranian citizens, infuriated, took to the streets and occupied areas surrounding universities in the capital, Tehran. Iranian police responded to this by firing tear gas at protesters. Let the cold war serve as an example for lack of communication and blaming “accidents” as to the historical consequences for poor communication.

Opinion: The Iranian government seems to have no just cause for this. In fact, this attack stands as a just cause of war for both Ukraine and Canada to retaliate or declare war on Iran. If this was an accident, the Iranian government should have been much more transparent about it in order to prevent speculation and paranoia amongst world leaders and the international community alike.

Discussion Questions
  1. What, if anything, can Iranian leaders do to resolve international tension with other world leaders and avoid potential war?
  2. Should the U.S. take action (Embargo, War, Etc.) in response to this event? If a U.S. passenger plane were to be downed, what should the appropriate action be to ensure international harmony and discourse remains stable?
  3. What should Ukraine and Canada do in response to this event?

  3. In my opinion, the Iranian leaders don't want to resolve any international tension. They blamed their impulsivity on "human error" when in reality they are instigating a world war. I don't think that the U.S. should take any action as they shouldn't risk creating an even further conflict with Iran. Of course, just like the sinking of the Lusitania in World War I which further involved the US in the war, the U.S. is known to take such action and involve themselves more. I think that Ukraine and Canada should declare war on Iran because their "human error" was not an error- you don't accidentally shoot down a passenger plane. An article by Yahoo News even describes the missile as "errant", revealing how it was completely unjust and unexpected. While it does appear to be an accident after Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued an apology to Ukraine and Canada it is awfully suspicious that this event so closely follows the Trump-administration approved assassination of Qasam Soleimani. Knowing that Canada and the US are strong allies, I would expect heavy retaliation.

  4. It's sad how innocent people die from these disasters. I do believe some leaders in Iran were responsible for the deaths of these people. I don't believe that killing people can be an accident, especially when a lot of countries were ready for a war before this accident happened. I do think that the Iranians may have done this to protect themselves, believing that someone may have hijacked the plane and was going to crash it into one of their significant properties, just like 9/11.

  5. The Iranian government is definitely at fault for the passenger attack, and if they apologized to Ukraine and Canada and compensated for their losses, they would be able to avoid further issues. However, they decided not to do so, so they are egging other world leaders, despite the general populace of Iran, as well as other countries, not wanting another war; in fact, militarily, Iran is quite weak, especially compared to the United States, so they are likely not calling for a war that would certainly destroy them, but rather are trying to see what they can get away with. I think that the best course of action in this scenario will forever be punishing Iran by isolating them with even more lethal sanctions, putting pressure on them to seek diplomacy; it could also further rile up citizens against their own government. Striking with force on Iran would be a mistake because it could make the country act with greater hostility and leave other countries with no other option but to declare war.
