Political leaders march against antisemitism in NY; Source: Jake Asner
25,000 people including NY Senators Kirsten Gillibrand & Chuck Schumer, NY Governor Andrew Cuomo, and NYC mayor Bill DeBlasio marched across the Brooklyn Bridge Sunday in protest of rising antisemitism in New York, the city with the largest Jewish population in the U.S. The New York metropolitan area has two million Jewish residents who have been alarmed by the recent stabbing of a rabbi and shooting that killed four in a kosher supermarket. Governor Cuomo committed $45 million to protect religious institutions, schools, and cultural centers against potential future attacks. Marchers shouted "no hate, no fear" in protest, with some condemning President Trump for sparking racism, while others blame representatives Omar & Tlaib for backing a movement to boycott Israel.
Discussion Questions
1. Should taxpayer dollars be used to protect religious institutions from potential future hate crimes?
2. What can politicians do beyond participating in the protests to deter future hate crimes?
3. Should President Trump, Ilhan Omar, or Rashida Tlaib be blamed in any way for the rising tide of antisemitism in the U.S.?
