China's New Virus

Image result for where has the corona virus spread
A new respiratory virus has recently developed in China. It was first discovered in Wuhan, but the virus has spread to other areas, and even other countries like Japan, Thailand, and South Korea. The virus was believed to be spread from animals to humans, and it first appeared in a fish market that has since been shut down. However, it has been discovered that the virus can also travel from human to human. This has led to countries in the area beginning to screen people who are traveling in an attempt to control the spread of the virus. The screening will be hard to continue through the lunar new year though, with people traveling to all different parts of the area to celebrate. If left unchecked, the virus could spread like a fire through the people that are traveling.

Questions:
  1. What do you think is the “right” way to try and contain the virus?
  2. Should there be more concern surrounding the new virus?
  3. Should China add more screening to the areas being traveled through to try and control the spread of the virus?

  1. I think there should be more concern for this virus. Because three people have already been killed by this virus, it should be held in high regard. Many should be working to find a cure or something to suppress this virus. It could prove to be a serious problem in the near future with the fact that it is spreading very quickly. More screenings should be added and awareness should be spread in the area and the neighboring areas.

  2. I think that there needs to be a lot of attention placed on figuring out the virus and ways to cure those affected by it. This way, researchers can take a sample of the virus and develop medicines that will hopefully eradicate it, and then proceed to distribute it to the public so that people can get better, and so that the outbreak can die down. In order to contain it as much as possible, I believe that there should be an increase in screenings so that the virus can be caught in people and hopefully, the number of those infected will lessen with time.

  3. With this virus beginning to spread, I think there should be lots of focus on containing the virus and preventing it from spreading to other countries and continents. Especially because it can be passed from human to human, there must be intense screening for travelers, and research must be continued to forming a vaccine for this disease (if possible, apparently the vaccine is in its beginning stages). After all, if we don't contain this virus and begin trying to cure or treat it, this will become a major world-wide issue

  4. Currently I believe that China is doing the right thing by doing screening and making sure the virus doesn't grow. But if the virus continues to grow I feel that it must be necessary for other countries to step in and assist in finding and stopping the virus. Honestly I feel the news outlets need to cover this more and get as much attention on it as possible in order to get humanity aware of a possible threat.

  5. I don't think that there's a perfect "right" way to contain the virus. Controlling it a lot would put massive restrictions on travel and restrict freedom, but too few controls allow the virus to spread rapidly and infect and kill more people. The world has to find a balance between these two factors, and do it quickly, before the disease spreads too much to be geographically contained. With fast and accessible air travel allowing diseases to cross oceans in mere hours, the clock is ticking. As of the writing of this comment the disease has at least one confirmed case in the United States, and the death toll has risen to ten.

  6. I think there should be more concern regarding the virus and preventing the spread to other areas of the world. Awareness should be raised and especially aid with how to stay safe and take steps that everyone can do to avoid further spreading the virus. I believe should the virus not become controlled soon, other countries need to step in and assist in keeping it contained.

  7. I think that raising awareness can really help keep the virus down. People should be on the look out for others with synmptoms of this virus. New secure ways should be invented for people to handle fish and meets that may contain viruses. All countries and scientists should be focused on trying to contain this virus early instead of waiting until it becomes a world wide epidemic.

  8. I think China is going in the right direction by screening people to see if the virus is spreading, but I believe more needs to be done about it. To prevent it from spreading, they should be coming up with a cure for it.

  9. To respond of question 1, I do not think there is a proper way to contain the virus. A large scale quarantine could help, however the funds and skill necessary to pull off a feat like that, would be astounding. And thus I do not believe it to be a viable solution to this new disease.

  10. I don't think there is any "right" way to contain the virus, however I think that are several ways that could help such as avoiding people who have the virus in their system, even if it means avoiding loved ones until they get better. I do believe that the people in China are doing a good thing by screening everyone, but since it's such a mass amount of people traveling, they should definitely add more screening to add another layer of protection of spreading this disease. This disease could prove a very serious problem, as the disease has made its way to the US, which could potentially cause a world wide epidemic with or without additional screening.

  11. There is no way to effectively contain the virus. As it has already spread to Japan and now the first case has already been reported in the US. There should definitely be more concern for the virus as we have no idea where it came from and how deadly it will be. According to this article: https://www.cnbc.com/2020/01/18/china-reports-number-of-new-sars-like-virus-cases-has-risen.html, the new virus is very similar to a virus called SARS. The SARS virus killed almost 800 people from 2002 to 2003 and also originated in China. We could be seeing another SARS like event happening today.

  12. China is doing the right thing by screening people for this virus, because if it travels outside of the region it could be very bad. Considering how it is contagious between people, it could very easily spread to a worldwide crisis. There should be more concern and measures taken because of this virus, because it has already killed people and will only get worse as it spreads. China needs to implement more screening to prevent it from getting out of control. While this would be difficult due to the busy new years travelling, it is a necessary measure so the virus can be contained and studied to hopefully find treatment, a cure, or vaccines.

  13. China must take more drastic steps in order to prevent this new virus from creating an irreversible health crisis. I understand that there is not much time for a vaccine before the Lunar year, but I think that China should concentrate all of its resources and money on making sure that this virus is contained. Additionally, I think there should be screening points all throughout Asia to make sure that the virus does not get out of control.

  14. China needs to take big steps in containing this virus. This seems like something that could take the world by storm is unleashed. I feel like China needs to section off infected and even people in an infected area. I feel like China needs to take this seriously.

  15. I believe that the right way to contain this virus is to continue to screen everyone that could have been in contact with it. Even though it will prolong the busy travel time it is completely worth it. If this virus spreads it could become an epidemic and cause many deaths all over the world.

  16. I think the right way to contain this virus is to try and get the word out and continue to screen everybody they can for the virus. It is a very serious virus because it had already caused people to die and it seems very infectious.

  17. I am not exactly sure how seriously the screening is being handled in areas of the region where the virus is, however I think that it is better to take more precaution than necessary than not enough. I think the word needs to be spread quickly about the threat of the virus so that infected people can be taken apart from the masses and the spread of the virus can be better contained.

  18. I think that there is no "right way" to try and contain the virus but I definitely believe that screening of people travelling from those areas is useful so that if they have the virus, they can be placed in a hospital where it can't be spread to others. I'm not sure how much concern there is right now, but there should be a lot of concern because this is serious. Maybe they can put effort into creating a vaccine against it. Yes, they should add more screening.

  19. I don't think that there is not really a "right way" to try and contain the virus, but I do believe that actions should be for the benefit of the people. Screening everyone exposed or potentially exposed to the virus should be a necessity, but violent mean should not be used. If screenings begin to turn into a problem, uprisings may occur and thus contributing towards the chaos.

  20. A right way? On that, I am not sure. I believe that there needs to be more knowledge displayed on the subject to deprive side effects, symptoms, and power of the virus. But I do believe people who are afraid of this virus or have contracted it should be required to wear a face mask in public areas, like an airport or a mall. I believe screening will only complicate the matter, though, because this will complicate necessary travels and disrupt public peace. The best thing to do in its current state is to just inform the public on how they can increase chances of keeping themselves and others safe.

  21. Like my other classmates have stated, I would not say that there is necessarily any "correct way" to try to contain the virus, but there are definitely many ways that they can bring coverage and awareness to the situation. At the very least, instructions on basic safety precautions, such as face masks, should be spread to anyone within reach of this virus. Screenings must be done in a reliable and controlled manner, as there is always room for error with these sorts of situations, especially with groups of people traveling. I do not think there is any need to use violence as a means of preventing further spreading, as I think it would just cause societal problems.

  22. I think the right way to contain the virus is like you said to screen people and to let the doctors know that there is a new virus that people should go to the doctor to be checked up on. I also think that because it is a new virus and there aren’t any remedies for this unique virus that it is hard to “control” the spread of this virus, however I believe that these countries should definitely pay more attention to visitors in and out of these contaminated areas.

  23. I think the best way to contain the virus and keep the death toll down is by setting up screenings. Depending on the thoroughness and the number of these checkpoints will change the effectiveness, I think major areas of transportation and all doctors offices and hospitals is a good place to start. Also with preventing the increase of deaths will most likely be by spreading awareness through any media possible.

  24. I think that there should be more concern in regards to this new disease. This disease has taken many lives and has been spreading. I believe that there is not really an effective way that will be able to stop the disease easily. There will be hardship into finding a cure or to temporarily stop it. In the meantime, I think that the best way to prevent the disease is to set up screenings, and to contain the people that have been affected in one specific area. This means that China should not let people take a flight without being screened first.

  25. I feel that there should be more concern about this virus, seeing as this is a new disease, we don't know much about it, and it is already spreading and has, so far, claimed the lives of 15 people. However, China has had experience with these sort of things, like when the SARS outbreak occurred. They should remember from that and change their strategy if needed.

  26. I think that this outbreak hasn't been talked about enough on the news. Other events such as the Impeachment trials have been storming the news and taking over headlines rather than this epidemic. So far, the death tole has risen to 41 and there isn't a cure. There should be a lot more concerns about this rapidly spreading virus and China should take more steps to control it, like quarantine areas with a high density of people.

  27. I believe the virus has been definitely been talked about in the news but there should also be more concern for this virus. The virus is still out there and can spread to plenty of more people. I agree with the quarantine and what the Chinese government is doing but they should do more to suppress and eventually get rid of it. The main priority should be finding a cure and treating the people that are contaminated at the moment. According to CNN (https://edition.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-hnk-intl-01-26-20/index.html) more than 50 people are dead and more will die if we don't do something about it.

  28. I think that the Corona Virus is a massive threat, and if it were to cross into more countries, it could easily become a global epidemic; China needs to add more screening to areas being traveled to as a measure to prevent the spread of disease, saving many lives in the process. I think that there needs to be more awareness about personal hygiene, as well as education how to be smarter consumers, in order to avoid contaminated foods that could cause the Corona Virus or other future illnesses. There should also be tougher law enforcement concerning the proper handling of sick animals and food.
