Travelers Burnt to Death in Their Own Cars

The militant Islamic group Boko Haram is suspected of to have killed 30 people and abducted many women and children. 18 vehicles were also destroyed. Some of whom were found burnt to death in their cars during an overnight stay. This took place in Auno Town on a major highway in Borno State, in other words, north-eastern Nigeria. Residents claim that these travelers were on their way to the state capital, but were forced to stop overnight because the military shut the road leading into the city. The Nigerian government isn't competently sure whether Boko Haram is responsible or if a breakaway group linked to the Islamic state (IS) group is at fault.

Discussion Questions:

1. How should the Nigerian government react towards Boko Haram and the IS?
2. Is the military at fault for preventing the travelers from entering the capital?
3. Should more precautions be taken in order to ensure the safety of the Nigerian people?

  1. This is a horrible thing that happened. I believe that more should be done to research exactly what happened, just so more of the facts are known. I also think that the Nigerian government should take the Boko Haram more seriously before anyone else gets hurt.

  2. I think that this type of thing should never have happened. To prevent this, more precautions should be taken to ensure their safety. I also believe that the Nigerian government should pursue Boko Haram and the IS and at least clear up what really happened and who was responsible. This way, specific precautions can be taken to prevent this in the future.

  3. I believe that this incident was surely caused by a terrorist group. It's hard to say which group caused it though. It is not fair to be attacking a group that did not cause this, but I think that the Nigerian government should watch Boko Haran very closely. If something like this happens again, they should take action. I do not believe that the military is at fault for preventing the travelers from entering the capital. The military was merely doing their job. I believe that precautions should always be taken to ensure safety of all people.

  4. I think the Nigerian goverment should respond to this attack by observing Boko Haran carefully in the future in hopes that an attack like this should never happen again and take precautions to protect their people. The military should not be blamed for this incident as they are regular humans with little to no intention to hurt the travelers.

  5. I think the government should investigate this attack to the best of their ability and look into if the Hamas were responsible for this attack or not and the government should attempt to avoid an attack like this from happening again.

  6. I think that the government should launch an investigation on this terrible incident. It never should've happened, and it should never happen again. To help prevent further attacks, it is important that the government discovers the cause of this one. It seems to me that it is very likely that this incident was caused buy a terrorist group but it is important to consider all options. I also believe that there should be more precautions set to help towards preventing another incident such as more military guards.

  7. I think the government should be more alert for more attacks to this one and watch Boko Harm very closely. It is definitely worth it to launch an investigation, considering that this incident will prevent tourists from visiting. This may lead their economy to suffer.

  8. Given their history, it seems more than likely that Boko Haram carried out this attack. The Nigerian population live in a state of fear because of terrorist attacks like these, and more needs to be done to help this situation. Although there is not easy solution, more security measures should be taken to protect the public from the Islamic state and groups like Boko Haram. The Nigerian citizens have the right to feel safe in their own home- this is a right that is currently being overlooked.

  9. I
think that the government does have a play in what happend. they should have been more careful with the travelers since they were responsible for them having to stay overnight. I think that now that is has happened they should investigate and find out what really happened so they can prevent it in the future.

  10. I think that this should be pushed to one of the top concerns for the government. They can't allow a terrorist group to do this and not try and take action back against them. Otherwise the terrorists will gain power and continue to ramp up their terror attacks until they try to overthrow the government and take over the country.

  11. I believe that the government should take more drastic measures in order to keep citizens of Nigeria safe. The government is aware of the problem and should not allow people to live in constant fear. There is no easy way to get rid of a terrorist group, but adding security throughout the state could help.

  12. I think that it is a necessity that more precautions are taken to protect the people of Nigeria against terrorist groups such as IS and Boko Haram. It is vital that the government push back against these terrorist groups so that they do not gain momentum. If these terrorists gain power it will be hard for the government to regain control and protect the people of their country.

  13. I think that the military is completely at fault. I think this because, if the civillians were never stopped, then nobody wouldve died. especially since the govt made them stay there, the least they couldve done was protect them.

  14. I believe that the government of Nigeria should focus more on placing precautions and keeping citizens safe. With groups such as Boko Haram in the country, these acts of violence will continuously occur unless the government does something to prevent it.

  15. I don't think the military is completely at fault for this attack. Even though if they hadn't prevented travelers from entering the capital, nobody would've died, they had no idea that this attack was coming. They were simply doing their job and had no intentions of harming the travelers. I do think more precautions should be taken to make sure this never happens again, like improving national security and hiring more guards.

  16. I believe that Boko Haram should be held responsible for their acts. Abducting hundreds of Nigerian school girls just years before, Boko Haram has never been held at peace. The Nigerian government, in conjunction with other actors, should find ways to cut revenue fueled to the terrorist group -- usually, from mineral, oil, and petroleum companies. Without a stable source of funding, recruitment and their central operations will gradually decrease.

  17. I think that if they didn't let them in there at least should have been some security or military assistance to protect these people if a highway is shut down. I feel like this could have been easily avoided if they was just at least some form of defense to fight against somebody like Boko haram who is willing to commit such violent attacks like this one. I blame the military/government for this attack

  18. I think that the Nigerian government should take this event seriously. They should pay more attention to Boko Haram, if nothing is done to stop them then there will most likely be a continuation of these horrible events. There should be more investigation as to what were the motives for killing the travelers. There should be better military protection in place so that if Boko Haram tries to attack again the millitary will be prepared.

  19. I think that this was definitely planned and was caused by a terrorist group. This could be caused by Boko Haram, considering their history and past attacks, but there is still no evidence it was them. If the government attacks Boko Haram, the government could get into deep trouble and Boko Haram would fire back. This would cause a lot of deaths and destruction, so attacking Boko Haram without evidence is not a good idea.

  20. From your information, a terrorist group clearly planned for this to happen. Although there were attacks, there is still no evidence that it was the Book Haram. Leading the Boko to fire back would lead to many deaths and unnecessary destruction.

  21. I think the Nigerian government should try to find out who and how killed these people while they were resting for the night. I believe that a terrorist group planned, Boko Haram could be responsible as people claim them to be. The Military couldn't have guessed that these peoples were going to be attacked. They should have let them enter in order for the to have some protection from terrorist groups. Nigeria should try its best to deal with the possible threats that may harm their citizens. They should also receive help from neighboring countries.
