Srebrenica survivors still living in camps

In July of 1995, Srebrenica, a Bosnian town, fell victim as a site of mass ethnic cleansing. More than 8100 people were killed. Despite the cruel circumstances they’ve faced already, Srebrenica survivors have been ignored and abandoned by the government. Although forces such as the United Nations (UN) have implemented refugee camps, only 7,000 of the almost 100,000 displaced people live in these temporary or collective shelters. A family of five would only receive a 400 euro pension, barely enough to even support one person adequately. Because of the bad conditions inflicted on the survivors, Srebrenica has been a prime example of transgenerational trauma, where the pain of suffering of survivors have passed on to their descendents which will in turn pass on to their children. Srebrenica is truly a horrific byproduct of terrorism and anarchy.

  1. What are some ways to improve conditions of refugees in Bosnia?
  2. Why has the government ignored these refugees?

  1. I feel the government has ignored these refugees because no one has spoken out for them and it isn't gaining international attention, I feel many international parties need to come together to become a voice for the victims or their government wont do anything for them

  2. The government probably does't want to deal with the situation because it would be extremely expensive. Housing that many people and providing adequate resources for them would be a huge blow to their economy. Other countries should step in and provide aid towards them, but international awareness would have to be raised in order for countries to be pushed towards aiding them. This government should also try to stop terrorism in a more efficient way that would protect the Srebrenica people from any further harm.

    1. I definitely think that cost and burdens of the Srebrenica survivors plays a huge factor in helping them with housing and resources. You bring up a great point of foreign intervention and how that can positively benefit them. So in the future, the Bosnian government should work with international bodies, non-governmental organizations, and non-profits. This way, they can probably stop terrorism and violence with extra support and resources to guide them onto the right path.

  3. The government is most likely ignoring the refugees because of the high cost it would take to provide helpful resources. This disregard for the refugees is unacceptable and the issue needs to be publicized more. This issue getting more publicity would lead to potential aid from countries worldwide.

  4. I think that the government has ignored these refugees because from their eyes, they are unimportant. This arrogant outlook is appalling and should be changed immediately. I believe more people need to take a stance and speak out for the rights of these refugees. By more people protesting, this issue will get more publicity and hopefully the government will see that they need to do something about it.

  5. The government has overlooked these refugees because they realize how expensive it will be to provide these people with better living conditions. There are a lot of conflicts going on all over the world right now and this issue has been overlooked but should have more attention. People should not have to live in these conditions and although the government may not be able to afford better conditions, it should be open to accepting foreign aid and more people should speak up.

  6. To respond to question 1, improving conditions for refugees may prove to be hard without a stronger political backing. However some ways that we could help refugees are supplying them with basic goods, like food and clean water. Secondarily, housing is a large issue that would hard to contribute to help. We maybe be able to donate to organizations to help build homes for the refugees, but that is about as far as we can help.

  7. I think that the people should be provided with better living conditions, although it may be more expensive I think with enough fundraising, it would be sufficient to provide the refugees with basic needs. I think that the government has ignored these refugees because they can't do anything for them, or maybe they have just given up on them.

  8. Some ways to try and improve refugee conditions would provide them with "care-packages" which include basic necessities. Their conditions are truly horrid, but spreading awareness and thus creating more refugee camps may allow more space for families. Establish a system in which they each care for areas to keep it sanitary may help too. I personally think that the government doesn't want to deal with their refugee crisis and would rather invest their time in matters they deem more important. They also may not know how to help them in the short and long term.

  9. some ways to try to better what is going could be helping the families that are already struggling or families that have been in refugee camps for a long time. I think the government is ignoring the refugees because they probably don't want to accept that they actually tried to get rid of people in general, especially in such a gruesome way.
