First Lady of Lesotho Charged for Murdering Prime Minister's Ex-Wife

The wife of the Prime Minister of Lesotho, Maesaiah Thabane, is accused of killing his past wife. His ex-wife, Lipolelo Thabane, was shot dead outside her home in the capital Maseru two days before his initiation in 2017. The assault was initially accused on unknown equipped men, yet ongoing court papers recorded by the nation's police official, Holomo Molibeli, have brought up further questions. A warrant of arrest was given to 42-year-old Maesaiah Thabane on January 10th after she vanished. Holomo Molibeli told the BBC that she was being held in custody and would be officially charged in court on Wednesday (Feb 5). This scandal has given Lesotho a bad reputation for international relations not only in Africa, but the entire world.

1 . What is your opinion on this situation? Is Maesaiah Thabane guilty or not guilty?
2 . What do you think Maesaiah Thabane’s motive was to kill her husband’s ex-wife?
3 . What are times in history we have seen people ignore all morals for greed?

  1. This is a very interesting story. What is the evidene that Maesaiah Thabane murdered Lipolelo Thabane. It doesn't seem like Maesaiah Thabane will receive a punishment, because there seems to be a lot of reasonable doubt that she was involved. Many people could be attempting to frame Maesaiah Thabane as it seems like many people do not like the Prime Minister of Lesotho.

  2. The article does not mention why the wife of the Prime Minister was suspected so I can't really tell if Maesaiah Thabane is guilty or not. If Maesaiah Thabane is guilty, a motive could be she was jealous of Thomas Thabane's ex-wife. There is no evidence to support this, but the article also mentioned that Thomas and Lipolelo Thabane had a bitter divorce. Thomas and Maesaiah Thabane could have been trying to get revenge on Lipelo Thabane. On the other hand, Lipelo Thabane could have been killed by supporters of Thomas Thabane and Maesaiah Thabane had no part in the killing. Because this story does not have much evidence and is still developing, it is hard to tell who did what and what happened. According to this article https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-04/lesotho-police-question-prime-minister-s-third-wife-about-murder, Maesaiah Thabane had been on the run. This makes her even more suspicious.

  3. I'm not sure if I can form an opinion on the situation yet, considering there is little to no evidence provided by Molibeli for the accusation. I am going to lean towards guilty because the fact that she “vanished” raises a lot of suspicions. Also, Molibeli must have had a strong case against Maesaiah to even think of accusing, then further arresting her. Still, the situation is extremely obscure and the amount of questions posed in my mind just verifies how unclear the situation is. Were there witnesses at the shooting? Why is she being accused if there is little evidence and an unclear motive? If the blame was originally put on "unknown equipped men", does this mean Maesaiah, if guilty, had hired a hitman? Even though the evidence is scarce, I think it's pretty likely that Maesaiah could be guilty.

  4. There might be more to the story than the media or even Prime Minister is letting on as this is a huge blow to his reputation across the world. Measaiah might have wanted to remove any influences that were from someone close to the Prime Minister. The evidence isn't very clear but Maesaiah running or suddenly disappearing is very suspicious and causes more eyes on the possibility of her murdering the ex-wife.

  5. In my opinion there is not enough evidence presented to decide of the Prime ministers wife is guilty or not. The fact that she vanished does arouse suspicion but there could be many explanations for the disappearance. If Thabane really did kill her, than I believe that it has something to do with Lipolelo relationship with the prime minister. I don't think that Thabane killed Lipolelo for greed so I don't think the third question is relevant.

  6. Because there are no points of blame directly towards Measaiah, and the accusations aren't proven, we can say that she is not guilty. Though the situation is still unsafe and questionable, she cannot be accused of such a crime until a solid conclusion with evidence is made. It doesn't seem that she will be receiving consequences any time soon, but she should have a close watch on her at all times until the conflict is settled. Her motive could have been a hatred or jealousy towards the past wife, therefore making it a possibility that she is actually guilty.

  7. I don't think that we have enough evidence to prove this murder or not and therefore for now I believe she is innocent, because innocent until proven guilty. I think a possible motive to kill the ex-wife was that she was perhaps jealous of their relationship and would rather get rid of her than deal with her own problems and figure out her own problems.

  8. In my opinion, i Believe that there is not enough evidence stated for maesaiah thabane to be proven guilty. I am sure that there is a lot more evidence that was not publicly stated but for now i am unsure. I feel that she wont get a harsh punishment since she was considered important.

  9. There have been many instances throughout history where greed and materialism has overpowered one's moral compass. In ancient times when polygamy was practiced, the king's many sons would compete for the position of the emperor and go to extents of killing each other to attain it.
