Kansas City Chiefs New Super Bowl Champs & Patrick's Awards

Image result for chiefs win super bowl
On Sunday, February 2nd, the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49'ers faced off in the NFL Super Bowl. The Niners let down the Bay Area and were defeated by the Chiefs with them at home, in Miami. Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs quarterback successfully helped his team win their first Super Bowl in over half a century. It was a very stressful and close game, until the Chiefs led by Mahomes, overcame a 10 point deficit against the Niners, making the score 31-20 which resulted in their winning of the game. The Chiefs then were made the first team in NFL history to have won three games after losing by 10 or more points in a single postseason. Following his terrific contribution to the Chiefs victory, Patrick Mahomes was named the Super Bowl MVP. This also means that he is now one of the three quarterbacks that have won the Super Bowl before their 25th birthday. Mahomes is also the youngest QB to receive Super Bowl MVP, and is the second youngest QB to win the Super Bowl.

1. Would the Niners have a chance at winning if Mahomes was not playing?
2. Did winning the Super Bowl at such a young age put Mahomes in a situation where he is expected to be good?
3. What other sports have their been young stars in?

  1. The Niners had a chance to win and were winning for majority of the game. Yes, Mahomes is an amazing player, but the defense of the Niners could have prevented the loss. The Chiefs were able to hold the Niners when they were only up by 4 (24-20). This allowed them to take full control over the game. The Niners had a chance at this moment to regain their lead, but they were not able to pull through. Their QB didn't make the greatest decisions and their linebackers were unable to hold back the Chiefs long enough for their QB to find any open receivers. The Chiefs played amazing defense, resulting in them winning. Mahomes is the reason why they were able to take the lead, but his teammates are the reason why they were able to keep it.

  2. The Niners had a great season however, many factors need to be considered as to why they lost. Sometimes it is simply luck or bad decision making down the stretch. Mahomes was focused and locked in until the very end, which is why he won it for his team. Football is a team sport and when only a few people from the Niners' side are beneficial, the other team has a chance to come back. The events which unfolded are complicated and the loss of the Niners cannot be attributed to a single cause or mishap.

  3. The Niners were the underdog all year and played well through regular season as well as the playoffs. But in this final game, I think the deciding factor was the Chiefs talented wide receiver core. These receivers are the fastest in the game and can make any secondary break down quickly allowing completions. Nevertheless, Patrick Mahomes is one of the break out Quarterbacks in the game and has made a huge impact on the league already. ALthough, while he did win Super Bowl MVP, he did not have his best game ever, and I think that will fuel his drive to be better. I do think Mahomes will be expected to be even better now, and there is a lot of pressure on him as the defending champ.

  4. Regardless of Mahomes playing for the Chiefs in the Super Bowl or not, the 49ers had a chance to take the win throughout the game. It came down to the fact that the offense for the 49ers continued to make mistakes and their defense were unable to make a big stop when it counted the most. For Mahomes, he was already expected to do exceptionally well and because of his comeback win against the Niners, he cemented himself as an elite quarterback for years to come.

  5. With Mahomes leading the Chiefs to victory, I think it does put him in the spotlight to excel in future seasons. However, this might not be the case because some people tend to feel a lot of satisfaction after winning a big event and after that, they feel as if they have accomplished what they wanted to. If this is the case with Mahomes, he may have a different mentality in the seasons to come, leading to poor judgement and endurance.
