How Los Angeles is remembering Kobe Bryant

It has been nearly a month since the terrible helicopter crash in a Calabasas hill on a foggy Sunday morning. On board were family members, friends, coaches, parents and their children, including Lakers legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna. Shock and disbelief spread worldwide and people set to grieve collectively and individually. Paint dried, ink settled into skin, and a city speckled purple and gold to honor a legend. On Monday the 24th, thousands of mourners were assembled at the Staples Center, “the house that Kobe built”, in Los Angeles to honor and celebrate the lives of Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna.  Since Bryant’s death, murals have popped up in New York, Massachusetts, Texas, and in the Philippines. Beneath them, fans have placed candles, flowers and personalized notes. The tears and remembrances from fans, fellow players and those he lifted up haven't stopped and will continue to grow as he will forever live on in all of them.
Discussion questions:
  1. Do you think this event should have been bigger than it already was and how?
  2. Because he was important to people, what importance do role models have in your lives?
  3. What would you have done if it was someone you knew and loved?

  1. I don't think that event should of been bigger, I believe it was a pretty good size, I don't really see the point of making it a global or just a bigger event, judging by how big it was. Kobe Bryant was definitely a role model in many lives, and he inspired many and made a big impact on the game of basketball. Role models serve as something that people strive to be, and I treat role models like goals, possibly someone that I would like to be when I grow up. I would obviously not have as big of an event if I lost a loved one, I think the only reason why the event was so big, because Kobe Bryant inspired people around the world, not just in the U.S

  2. I think this even was very large. There were many tributes to him and tons of fans were sending love to his family. Role models help shape who we are and they motivate us to strive to do better, to be better. They are important because we look up to them and we depend on them. They can help us through tough times and can give us advice about how to handle any situation. Everyone's role model is different, but they help people mature and grow into the people they want to be.

  3. The event and memoriam of Kobe Bryant and his daughter was already very large and I don't think there is a necessity for a larger event. Although Kobe Bryant was a star and his death was tragic in that he died young and had a great future ahead of him, any more of a memoriam in his honor would have been overdoing it and would have disrespected his life as a star. Putting more emphasis on his death instead of remembering him in his life would have been disrespectful to his legacy. Role models are important in life in order for people to have hope and dreams, I'm certain Kobe Bryant was many people's role model and inspired many to pursue their dreams, whether their dreams were in basketball, another sport, or anything else. Role models are inspiring because they follow their dreams with passion and determination. If it was someone I knew and loved, I would be heartbroken and I would do my best to move on after mourning and honor their memory.

  4. The event was already very large, therefore I do not think there is a necessity for a bigger event. Kobe will forever be remembered as a strong and inspiring role model. His legacy as a great basketball player, loving dad and a compassionate person will forever live on. Kobes' inspiration is bigger than basketball and continues to be far reaching.

  5. I believe Kobe's ceremony was done at the respectable magnitude. He was a legend and an icon in the LA area and to gather thousands in order to commemorate him was the right move. They didn't put emphasis on how he died, they celebrated his life. Everyone remembered him for his best moments instead of mentioning his tragic death. They mentioned his love of basketball and talked about how he served as a role model for many. It wasn't mourning, it was celebration which took place in the Staples center for Laker legend, Kobe Bryant.

  6. This was a devastating event that shocked the whole world, and I think that all that is being done for him is great. I think that it is great that he is being honored and celebrated by so many. In my life, one of my biggest role models is Al Gore, all that he has done and is doing to protect our earth is super inspiring. If someone I knew was on that helicopter I would have been absolutely devastated. I probably wouldn't have come to school that week even.

  7. I don't think this event had to be bigger. I think just by doing the ceremony and having people honor Kobe was a big enough gesture of respect towards the legend. In my life, role models serve as an inspiration and someone to look forward to. They provide hope and confidence, and help me create goals for my life. If it was someone I knew and loved, I can't even imagine what I would've done. It's so scary and something I wish nobody had to experience.

  8. Role models play a big role in everyone's life, whether they realize it or not. Some people look up to sports legends like Kobe Bryant, whereas others look up to more personal figures in their life such as a parent or grandparent. In my life, my grandma is my greatest role model. Her, along with other figures in my life set standards for the way I live and give me hope for achieving my goals in the future. It always helps when you have someone to set an example.

  9. I think that Kobe and the others deaths were celebrated beautufully and respectfully. I think if something as tragic as this happened to a loved one first off I would be devastated. I would mourn their loss, but eventually I would celebrate their life the way that I feel like they would want to be celebrated.

  10. Role models inspire us to become better people. They have different impacts on everyone. If it was someone I had personally known and had spent time with, I would've held a memorial in remembrance of them. They way Kobe's family, friends and fans celebrated his life and his daughter's was beautiful. I can't even begin to imagine how difficult it must have been for Vanessa to speak at the memorial.

  11. This event was very beautiful and perfect in honoring Kobe, Gianna, and the other victims. Thousands of people went to show their love for them. I was very touched by the speakers who really showed me how much Kobe and Gigi had touched their lives. It really shows how good of a role model Kobe was.

  12. Role models have a huge impact in our lives. Some people can be oblivious to who theirs is, but everyone has one, a person that we strive to be like or look up to. From this, we can change our appearance, opinions, attitudes, or any other personal traits in order to be more like our role models, even if its a small change. These are able to pave the way for how we live and how we see others.
