What is the Future of the Pandemic?

Safe distances for passengers to wait in shown by the white circles (Paris train station)
2020 has been an extremely hard time for the entire world. One of the most key points has been the outbreak of COVID 19. It has changed everyone's lives from going to work and school every day to staying at home and only leaving when necessary. Civilian protests are encouraging many states to loosen restrictions. As Marc Lipstich, an infectious disease epidemiologist at Harvard's TH Chan School of Public Health said, "It's going to be a matter of managing it over months to a couple of years. It’s not a matter of getting past the peak, as some people seem to believe" (nytimes.com). Many people would get upset at the scientists and doctors that are working hard to combat this epidemic for its slow cure. However, people forget that our generations have never been in this situation before and as most viruses do, COVID 19 could change or adapt to anything because we just don't know enough about it. Another important thought to realize is that studies show 70% of the world will get infected by the Coronavirus. Now, it's perfectly reasonable to ask, "So why should we quarantine and wear masks if most of us will contract it anyways?".  The reasoning is that even if a high majority of people will receive the virus, the goal is to slow the transmission from person to person so that the healthcare system doesn't get overwhelmed. Will the world be able to stay in this situation for much longer?

  1. What are some ways people can stay calm during this period?

  1. Do you think the rules on quarantine should be lifted?

  1. I believe that to stay calm during this time, everyone should stay home as much as possible. By doing this, we are preventing the virus from spreading. It is important to keep yourself busy to get your mind off of the stressful conditions going on. I do not think that the rules on quarantine should be lifted because they are vital to slow the infection spread rate. Social distance is a method that has proven to be affective so we must follow it in order to keep ourselves safe and the society safe.

  2. In order to stay calm during this time, everyone should stay home and practice social distancing the best they can. By doing this, we are preventing the virus from creating a bigger impact on the world than it already has. Taking time to evaluate one's mental health is vital in a situation like this. Therefore, meditating and keeping your mental health in check is important to help everyone stay calm. I do not think that the rules on quarantine should be lifted because they are imperative to slow the spread of the pandemic. Social distance has proved its effectiveness and lifting the rules will be as if we have stayed in quarantine for nothing.

  3. It's easy for people to be anxious about being quarantined, especially if they live in a location with many cases of the virus. I believe that the best way to stay calm about this is to understand the situation and why exactly we need to be quarantined to keep us safe. I believe that misunderstanding the situation is the key reason why people have been protesting to loosen restrictions. They are likely people who haven't been directly impacted by the virus; therefore, they don't understand why.
Personally, I would love to get outside with my friends and be able to enjoy my summer plans, but I also understand the seriousness of the situation. The rules of quarantine should only be lifted when the spread of the virus can be controlled/contained, in order to keep everyone safe.

  4. I dont think restrictions should be lifted on covid, this is a disease we should try our best and control the spread of because many people with weakened immune systems wont be able to fight off the virus if they contract it. We should all do our part and wear masks, stay inside, and only go outside if necessary

  5. I do not believe that it is yet time to lift the quarantine or any other restrictions from the COVID-19 outbreak. As seen in other places like Wuhan were it began there is the risk of a second wave emerging if the bans are lifted too soon. In addition, in Wuhan almost all of the cases were gone, the outbreak was completely controlled, and they still suffered from a second wave. Here in the United States the outbreak is still ongoing. The restrictions that are already in place have not been as effective as they would need to be to quickly stop the spread of the virus. Many people continue to go outside without masks and expose themselves and others. The pandemic is not being taken seriously enough and it shows in the numbers when compared to other other countries.

  6. During this period it is important to stay home so in order to stay calm people should find ways of coping with staying at home and find different things to do. The rules for quarantine should not be lifted because it could cause an increase in casualties. It is important for everyone to stay healthy or else everything will never go back to normal.

  7. People should stay home in order to slow the spread of COVID-19. Letting up on restrictions should wait until we know for sure that leaving our homes won't do more damage than not. We all need to believe that quarantine will end. We can't put our emotions over our safety right now. We're all restless; we all want to see our friends and family but ending quarantine will only make things worse for us.

  8. In order to stay calm, it is important to find a hobby which can be done daily, to take a portion out of your day. By doing this, you can progressively get better at tasks you want to try. Another way to stay calm during quarantine is to call people you know, and make conversation.

  9. To maintain sanity and tranquility during this tumultuous time, it is important to be self reflective and metacognitive. Picking up new hobbies, or restarting old ones, can be a helpful coping mechanism to distract your brain. Unfortunately, the restrictions and social distancing will remain for the rest of 2020. So we need to get our shit together.

  10. getting anxious during this time is very easy. It can be hard to spend so much time in one place and having so much time to think. One way people to stay calm is to find hobbies and to try and stay active. i]I think that it is hard to stay motivated since there is nothing to do but keeping a routine can bring some control to the situation since there are a lot fo unknowns.

  11. I believe that the restrictions such as places being closed and staying at home need to continue for the time being. It is really important to try mitigate the spread of the virus, and by having certain guidelines and restrictions in place, we are able to more effectively protect ourselves and each other. While it really isn't enjoyable being at home all the time and not being able to see friends, the more we invest in being safe hopefully will translate to a faster timeline of being able to ease restrictions and go back to normal.

  12. I think that managing stress and anxiety in this time is very important, but also difficult. There is lots going on in the world and it can be overwhelming. Managing stress can be done in many ways, from getting more sleep, to taking some time to just sit around and watch TV. It depends on the person, but it is extremely important to manage anxiety and stress.

  13. I definitely don’t think that quarantine should be lifted. As much as everyone is eager to get out of the house, people that have not been directly affected by the virus seem to forget the true danger of the situation. This is uncharted territory for us and it’s better to be over cautious and use “what if” thinking than to take a risk and have to say “oh well” when hundreds of thousands more unnecessary deaths occur. The virus is something that is here, and will continue to stay with us for a while if not addressed properly. People are of course struggling economically and this is an issue that can not be ignored, but as of right now businesses are shut down and aside from grocery shopping there’s no real need to break quarantine.

  14. I think it is essential for people to stay home in order to get control of the pandemic. There are many ways to stay entertained and busy while quarantining at home. Even though going outside is tempting, you can spend some time trying out new hobbies or getting some extra sleep. I don't think quarantine guidelines and restrictions should be lifted because there would be more hot spots and we would be quarantining longer.

  15. It is essential for all people to stay inside as much as possible. On the other hand people risk their jobs by staying home. This can cause a huge problem with companies such as Tesla who are forcing workers to come back before the ban is lifted. If they don't come for work they may get fired and have no income. While it is imperative to stay inside some people may have no choice to leave their homes. Already new hot spots are popping up around the country because bans were lifted too early.

  16. It is important to remember the difference between the shelter in place order that has been given, and a quarantine. To stay calm, I recommend talking to some friends on the phone, or taking up cooking.

  17. Quarantine cannot be lifted immediately, but it also can't remain like this forever. We must take slow, baby steps when re-opening our area and entire country, and we should be prepared for the possibility of another wave or peak in infections soon after we re-open. However, these baby steps are necessary to be taken when the government thinks it is safe to start doing so, because many people and businesses rely on our world being opened up, and although remaining in quarantine for years may definitely stop the spread of the virus, it is probably not a realistic way of life for most people and companies.

  18. It is still much too early to lift quarantine. It can't be like this forever but slowly we need to adapt and try to go back to normal. To stay calm I watch TV.

  19. While this quarantine may seem irritating and inconvenient to some, I think it is far too early to be lifted. Many people have a done a great job and doing their part, but the media has shown that many people are not. It is important that we continue to do our part to ensure that when the moment comes to lift the rules, we will be safe. In the meantime, I have been talking to friends, cooking, and doing art to stay busy.

  20. Some ways people can stay clam is staying at home and doing something like reading or drawing. They can even go on a walk to get some fresh air while still doing social distance.
