Elon Musk's Newest Release: X Æ A-12

Elon Musk and his wife (Claire Boucher) Grimes

This Monday, Elon Musk's announcement of his newborn child took the internet by storm. The reason for the commotion amongst the general public was the child's name: X Æ A-12.
Many wondered whether it was a joke at first because it seemed extremely odd that anyone would give their kid such an unusual name. However, Musk and his wife have made it quite clear that they were serious. Still, people are questioning the legitimacy of the name since California, like many other places such as Sweden and New Zealand, have regulations on baby names. Regardless, Musk and Grimes seem insistent on keeping the name. Grimes even posted on Twitter giving an explanation of the name's origin. The first letter of his name X, stands for the variable representing and unknown value often used in math. The Æ, according to Grimes is her elven spelling of love/artificial intelligence. The symbol is pronounced "ash" and can also be found in Latin and Old English as well as a letter in languages like Icelandic, Danish, and Norwegian. Lastly, the A-12 stands for the couple's favorite aircraft that was built for the CIA and is known by its designers by the name; Archangel. It is still unclear how the name is pronounced but the most common speculation is "X Ash Archangel". The newborn hasn't even been alive for a week and he already has millions of people tracking his growth.

1.) Do you think that because of Elon Musk's announcement we'll begin to see an increase in unusual baby names around the world?

2.) Was it a good move to give the child such an odd name considering that he will be growing up in public eye for his entire childhood and early life?

3.) How might the newborn's unusual name affect his life as he gets older?

  1. I think that Elon Musk's child's name is stupid. The only reason they gave their kid that name was because they are celebrities and are in the public eye. So they know it would get press/ media attention. X Æ A-12 is a not a suitable name for a human being, someone who will go through life looked at like an alien.

  2. I believe that naming a child like that seems extremely usual and weird. They may be trying to get more publicity so people forget about some of Elon's unintelligent tweets he made earlier this week. Naming a baby this seems cruel, like the baby is a test subject or something not worth a real name. He probably may be bullied because of his name. X Æ A-12 will probably go through life like an outcast.

  3. I think that naming there child such an odd name will only prove to challenge the kid as he grows up in society. Even with people with unique names, like myself, know that sometimes it can be annoying or frustrating when our names are blatantly made fun of or mispronounced. Because his name doesn't even sound like any kind of human name, he will probably face challenges and mockery when he grows older. However, because he will be growing up in the public eye, it might be deemed less weird than a civilian. Many celebrities tend to name their children outside of the norm, so this doesn't come as much of a surprise as one would think.

    1. Sorry, I was signed into a different account, but this comment was made by myself.

  4. I think that Elon Musk's childs name is amazing. Although, it is far from normal, I love the creativity and thought put into it! I hope to see more "unusual" names develop in the future. Very cool Elon!

  5. I do 100% believe that because of this unique and different name we will see many other families naming their children interesting names like Elon Musk's baby. I honestly do not know if this was his smartest decision, however it is their child and they have the power to name it to their liking no matter what. I think in the public-eye it might come off as a bit strange and hard to pronounce, but I think after time people will get used to the variation in names in our evolving society. Who knows, we might eventually have numbers as names?

  6. I'm not sure if this about this move that Elon and his wife pulled. I think the child will still live the same life they would have with a normal name. He'll probably just developed a common nickname that his peers will call him by. Although personally I'm not a fan of this move.

  7. I don't think that this will make other families interested in naming their own children weird names. I don't think it is a good move to give your child such an odd and weird name. The name makes it sound like the baby is a new invention and not a child.

  8. I don't think it was a good move to name their baby such an unusual name. Although it is creative, it is highly confusing and it will be difficult for the baby as he grows up. Furthermore, part of his name isn't even in the regular english alphabet so good luck to him at school. To be honest, I think they should have thought more about how he is going to live with that name since he will have to explain it every time he meets someone new, not very considerate of the parents.

  9. I feel bad for their kid because having a name that most people don’t even know how to read is going to be hard. In school the kid will know when they get to his name on the attendance list because of the teacher’s awkward pause, and then they’ll have to explain to practically every single one of their teachers and peers how they’re supposed to say it. You use your name in everything you do, the example of school is very small compared to other instances in which the kid will struggle with its name. Of course, all of this could be made slightly better because the kid will grow up in the public eye and have his whole name situation be known about by many people. Overall, the baby should enjoy his first few years in which his name is irrelevant to him because it’s going to get really confusing really soon.

  10. For most kids, having a name with strange characters and symbols would be weird and difficult. For the child of someone like Elon Musk, it just helps stand out and is a way to stay memorable/attract media attention. I don't think his life will be too much harder because of this name; nearly everyone he meets will have heard of it before.

  11. Whether a child is going to grow up in the public eye or not, it's never a good move to give them an unusual nickname like X Æ A-12. However, this baby's parents are Elon Musk and Grimes, so it is not much of a surprise that it got named something as odd as that. Also, I am assuming that his parents are going to give him am easier-to-pronounce nickname, but if not, it won't be as much of a problem as people are making it out to be since it's likely that everyone will know who he is/ who is parents are once he starts attending school.

    1. I agree with your statement that it was somewhat expected for Elon and Grimes to give their child a unique name. Also, while his name might cause confusion for some I also agree that most people will already know who he is and who his parents are. Even if there is some confusion I doubt it will happen often enough to become a hassle to explain.

  12. While I expected an unusual name coming from Grimes and Elon, I feel like this name was a bit much. This child is already being made fun of online, and I can't imagine the frustration he will feel when he has to explain his name to people in the future. I would personally dislike having such an unusual name, but it is possible that he will enjoy having a name that isn't typical for a child.

  13. I don't think we will see an increase in strange baby names around the world because of this. I think Grimes and Musk just used the opportunity that they had a child and the fact that they are so popular to their advantage to get attention. It was definitley not a good idea to give their child such a strange name.

  14. The name that Elon Musk has given his child is definitely strange and weird. For that reason, I don't think that more parents will be giving their children unusual names. With a name such as that, I think that it will most likely be difficult for the child to fit in and grow up without facing some form of criticisim.

  15. I personally think that Elon Musk giving his child an unusual name can potentially inspire other parents to use uncommon names, but not to the same extent as Musk. Honestly, I wouldn't want such a unique name because it would personally make me feel out of place. Especially in the eyes of the public, there is no doubt going to be judgement and pressure growing up due to both their name and family. I feel as if it will lead to negative consequences, but the child may potentially thrive on the attention.

  16. I don't believe that because of Elon Musk's announcement, we'll see more unusual baby names around the world. I also don't think it was a good idea at all to give a child such an odd name; I can imagine how much X Æ A-12 will have to explain how to pronounce his name in the future. With the negative response to the announcement of his name that I've seen, this may have a negative impact on his self-identity in the future :(

  17. When I first saw this name I was admittedly shocked, that being said, I am not very passionate about this topic, because I believe that it is very inconsequential and also to an extent that you should let people do what they want. I do hope however that this will not have too much of an impact on the child, and thats the first place my mind went. I would imagine that it will no doubt bring consequences, though this is also the son of a couple with over 40 billion dollars to their name, and that is worth being kept in mind. I think that what would definitely make it worse is all of this attention that is being brought to it. We have more important things to focus on.

  18. I think that with Elon Musk and many other famous people naming their children ridiculous names there's bound to be people following in their footsteps. However, I think that is cruel to the children who have to grow up with these horrific names. He will most likely grow up prejudiced because of his name and everyone will know exactly who he is. All that fame and attention could severely affect his mental health. I think that they should have thought more about how his name could affect his future.

  19. I think there are already many unusual baby names around the world, but this one is definitely much more odd than others. Elon Musk also has a lot more media on his child than the rest of the world because of his immense wealth and importance. I don't think it was a good idea to give his child such a weird name because most people don't even know how to say it. His name is definitely something that could be criticized when he's older.

  20. I don't neccesarily think this will make more parents want to name their children outlandish names like this. It's a disservice to the child if anything. The name is so distracting that if he ever ends up going to school he would be a very easy target of bullying amongst immature students. I know if I were him I would beg for a change to a normal name as soon as possible because I don't want people to just think of how weird my name is when they first think of me.

  21. I don't think it will cause an increase in unusual baby names, but I do think that more people will start going by their full names. Furthermore, I don't think it will be particularly bad for X Æ A-12 because unusual names are fairly commonplace these days.

  22. I can't comprehend why an individual, especially someone with the fame of Elon Musk, would give their child such an unusual name. In my eyes their act was irresponsible because it attracts unnecessary attention to their child and is such an odd name that the child will surely be bullied. In addition, Musk and Grimes naming their child as they have seems to be in disregard of the child's life. Names can characterize people and contribute to how one sees themself and how they are perceived by others.

  23. I don't believe that there will be an increase of unusual name. The name is seeking attention from the media. It is unknown why Musk and Grimes chose that name, but it was irresponsible as parents. That child will not be able to have a somewhat normal because of it's name. There will be people who bully the kid for having such an unusual name.

  24. Sometimes I wonder if celebrity parents give their children unique names to draw attention and/or bring publicity to themselves (the parents).

  25. I think that no one will name their children in such a weird way that Elon has decided to. That is not to say that there won't be any, I just don't think that it will be a trend. I think that giving the child the name despite being in the public spotlight has no real relevance on his growth or development. SUre he may be teased for it but that will just give him fortitude. Also he is the son of one of the richest people in the world and he will have his own school. As he gets older I think that people will accept the name and just treat him normally, or as normal as a super wealthy person can be treated. I think that he will most likely use a nickname and his name will bear little relevance on his life.
