Many experimental drugs are coming out that are allowing Covid-19 patients to recover quickly

Although we are in the supposed two-week peak of coronavirus outbreaks, there are treatments different companies are working on that have shown promise for potential coronavirus cures. Gilead has come out with an experimental drug called remdesivir, and is currently in the process of their clinical trial where they are testing the drug in 2,400 patients with severe Covid-19 symptoms and in 1,600 patients with moderate symptoms. With taking the drug, most patients have been discharged from the hospital within 6 days. Israel has also created an experimental drug called Pluristem. They have only tested it on 6 Covid-19 patients, but they were all in critical condition and were all able to recover. There are many other companies around the world today still experimenting with different possible cures for the virus, providing a sense of hope to this crisis.

1.With today's technology do you think a cure will be created?

2.Should we be putting in more money, time, and effort in finding a cure? To what extent?

3.If the virus mutates, do you think with the knowledge we have now on Covid-19 that a cure would be developed more rapidly?

  1. With today's technology I believe that a cure and/or a vaccine will be created, although those could take a while, because scientists have to discover it, test it, get it approved by various organizations, and undergo additional testing as well. Additionally, people might not know the side effects of new cures, which can prove to be deadly, so while we should be putting a lot of money, time, and effort into finding a cure, people should also not rush the process and focus on that as the only solution here, and instead accept that we will most likely have to live with this virus for a while and instead focus on mitigation.

  2. With the technology that we have today, I think we will find a cure to the virus that is, unfortunately, going around right now. It will definitely take a lot more time for it to get approved and for everyone to be safe with the vaccine.

  3. Yes, with today's technology it is possible to create a cure because technology has evolved to a greater extent and is still growing. There should be more money, time, and effort put into the cure because by doing so we can save thousands of lives. If this serious virus keeps affecting everyone the economy may possibly collapse and cause the wipe out of part of the Earth's population which is something that we would want to avoid.

  4. Yes with today's technology a cure isn't an if but a when. Hopefully governments and people find a balance between public safety and the continuation of worldwide shutdowns with the efforts to create a cure. Simply put, a cure wouldn't help if society has been destroyed. And hopefully as this crisis goes on scientists will begin understanding Covid-19 and all its possible mutated strands in order to find a reliable cure for all of us.

  5. With all of today's technology a cure should not be to far off in the distance. These experimental drugs seem to be working but companies should proceed with caution. Governments all around the world have been spending massive amounts of money in order to help people. The United States pasted the CARES act which uses 2 trillion dollars to support the country. At this point it is important to stay safe and just be patient.

  6. Yes, I do believe that with today's technology a cure is possible in hopefully the near future. As stated in the article, technology has allowed the advancement of possible vaccines already. Currently, I feel as if there are already a lot of companies investing in the virus, ranging from newer ones to experienced. They could possibly utilize the Silicon Valley more for research and such, but if too much is invested into just finding a cure, it will undoubtedly have consequences on the economy etc.

  7. In my opinion, I believe with modern technology a cure will be created soon. There have already been 2 possible vaccines created as an outcome of modern tech. Also, the government is investing a lot of money for this global pandemic to come to an end quick. Clinical trials will be performed with more research "easier" due to the availabilities.

  8. I think that because we have such advanced technology now finding a cure to the virus will be easier and faster then in the past. I think that there should be funding going towards finding a cure to the virus because of how much it is affecting the community and the world.

  9. I think that if the virus were to mutate soon, it would only add to the problem. Although, as you mentioned,  more experimental drugs have been coming out which hints at a more permanent solution in the near future- if it were to mutate I think it would force the world to take a step back. However, if a more sustainable treatment was established before we saw a rise of a mutation of the virus. So, I think it all really depends on timing. The more time scientists can get to work on the virus while the world is in a sustainable degree of health the better, meaning they will be well prepared for out current situation and what may be to come.

  10. I think that despite the technology we have at our disposal a cure will most likely not be found for a while since viral infections are still very hard to find a cure for. An example would be HIV which still doesnt have a definitive cure. I think the best way to spend research and cash would be just for treatment as people ussally can be cured themselves so lessening symptoms would be best way to make recovery easier.

  11. I think in terms of treatments, and things to aid in recovery for the virus are much more efficient and costly to create and distribute. However, today our technology is so advanced that cures have been discovered for thousands of diseases. It is not certain that there will be a complete cure for the disease, but very likely that there will be. For now, all we can do is try to prevent the spread (as we are doing so with the shelter in place), which is more cost and environmentally friendly anyways.

  12. I think that with today's technology, a cure is definitely going to be found. However, we don't know how long it will take, and it probably won't be discovered for a while. I think we should be putting in more money, time, and effort into finding the cure because it is highly contagious and it has affected the lives of pretty much everyone, whether they have coronavirus or not.

  13. According to Forbes, the U.S. has already spent over $1 billion to try and find cures and treatments for COVID-19. This is only a part of the over $3 billion that the government has spent trying to deal with COVID-19. This month, the Department of Health and Human Services also announced a pledge of more than $2 billion dollars for future ventilators. As the virus keeps spreading, we'll inevitably have to spend more money on it. However, I think we should be spending more time collaborating. Labs working on finding cures should be sharing their findings with each other. Instead of competing with each other, they should work together. This would help us find a cure faster. Companies should be putting more time into helping each other solve this problem together.

    1. I absolutely agree that companies trying to find a cure should be working together. Things usually seem to always be a competition in our world, but this is a time of crisis where people should be coming together to find a solution as soon as possible so more people do not have to suffer.

  14. Our technology is getting more advanced by the day, so I am confident that in time we will find a cure. It is hard to say when a complete cure will be found but for right now it is crucial that people focus on staying home and washing their hands.

  15. I believe that we are capable of creating a cure with the technology we have today. However, I think it will take quite a bit of time. I do believe we should be putting more money/time into finding a cure, as the number of cases have proven its ability to spread.

  16. With the technology we have today, i think we have a good shot at creating and finding a cure but we don't know how long it will take to find it.

  17. I do believe that a cure can be created with the technology that we have today but it is no question that this vaccine could take a while. Because the pandemic is the world's biggest issue right now, I definitely think that it is best that there should be more money and time put into fixing it which a lot of countries have been doing. If the strand does mutate, it will probably become an issue but hopefully the knowledge we have of the coronavirus will be able to help with that.

  18. Definitely, I do believe that with our advanced technology we will be able to find a solid solution and vaccine for Covid-19. Even though right now all countries are simply experimenting on which medicines to use, we will come up with a solution. Even if we have to do a lot of research and experiments it will work out in the end. I believe that right now solving this case is the most important thing right now because it is causing global damage. Everywhere around the world countries are suffering to solve this case and treat patients. Because this is such a big issue, finding a cure and treatments should be our #1 priority. If the virus mutilates, it will definitely become an issue however, with out studies I believe that we can find another cure.

  19. We definitely will be able to find a cure eventually. It's just a matter of when. We could put more money into it to increase the pace and get it out sooner but the money could also be used for a lot of things concerning the virus. I think we're spending a lot of effort and time already on the cure since it's in such a dire need. I feel like if the virus mutates, it'll be harder to find a cure and it'll take more time but it is definitely still possible to find a cure.

  20. I absolutely think a cure will be created but it will take a while, maybe up to a year. The process is being rushed so it won't take as long as most drugs but I do think the FDA will be very careful when processing this drug. The FDA must ensure it is completely safe and if it is not, it should not be used no matter if it works on a couple patients or not. I think we are putting more than enough time, effort, and money into finding a cure. It is not as pressing of a matter as it seems to be so long as people take the proper measures to keep themselves safe and clean, there shouldn't be any cause for concern. I think the larger issue lies in the hands of people being unsafe and not taking the issue seriously or people taking the issue much too seriously and being irrational. People tend to lose their heads in times of crisis and we are seeing that now. If the virus happens to mutate, I think we will be able to find a cure. Technology and modern medicine is very advanced. People just need to wait and take care of themselves.

  21. I think a cure will be created. I think there will be a lot of trial and error and it will be similar to the flu vaccine. I think that is it mutates that it will be addressed must faster and properly than the current virus is. I too think that the larger issue is how people are recreating and what is stemming from this virus than what is actually happening. The media has instilled a lot of panic into people which was not needed. Like People have said before, just take care of yourself.

  22. I am very confident in saying at soe point, a cure will be created. I think companies are rushing faster than ever before to come up with these cures, as they know they make incredible amounts of money and worldwide fame and appreciation if they do so. We just have to keep getting through it for now, and having positive thoughts towards this topic. I think once a cure comes out I think there would be some consideration to make it a holiday in the world to celebrate for future generations to be educated among this topic. Just a thought.

  23. I think a cure is bound to be created because all the pharmaceutical companies are working really hard to find one. There will be a lot that works and a lot that doesn't but for now the best we can do is stay 6 feet apart.

  24. I believe that a cure will be created but not in the next few months. It takes years to produce a vaccine and get it delivered to everyone. I believe that if there are organizations who truly believe that they are close to creating a cure and need more support, they should be supported but only if they are legit about their work. If there was to be a mutated virus, I think that with the research that we have, scientist could have a better chance of finding a cure instead of starting rom scratch.

  25. With today's technology, I think that a cure will be able to be created. I think that it is a matter of when, not if. It is such a big problem that there are so many people working to make a cure that it is only a matter of time. I think us as individuals can only put in money, if we were to contribute, because of our limited knowledge of biochemistry and biostructure. I think that we can donate money to help ease the hardships of COVID-19. I think that it would be more beneficial for our financial aid to go to the people who are suffering economically from COVID-19. I think that mutation is never a good thing for the virus because it would only mutate to make the current drugs we have less effective or not effective at all.

  26. All the other comments are stating that a CURE will be created; however, I have much reason to believe that this is not the case. What will be created in the near future is a TREATMENT. We are miles away from a CURE. COVID-19 carries many structural similarities to HIV, a virus that damages the immune system; scientists worldwide have been searching for a cure to HIV for the past FIFTY years without success. Additionally, there are signs that COVID-19 is mutating, which creates complications, as new vaccines would have to be developed to keep up. Usually, these processes would take years upon years: time that we do not have when so many people are dying, and the global economy is taking a massive hit. The only way to combat this and find a treatment swiftly is to push the FDA to hurry their inspections and invest more money into COVID-19 research.
