John Krasinski Sheds Positive Light on the Negativity Surrounding the Coronavirus

With the spread of Covid-19 taking more and more lives as it sweeps through the country, many have begun to lose hope in seeing a brighter outlook for the world we are living in now. The media outlets are filled with news about the death tolls or the new hotspots of the novel Coronavirus, leaving behind darkness in its wake. However, actor John Krasinski, star of the popular Netflix show The Office, has begun to fight against the negativity and pessimism which the Coronavirus spreads. He started a news outlet on Youtube which only reported the good news which happened around the world. His videos detail the heroic acts first responders have done and how people commemorated them. Many listeners of SGN submit their own stories, many of which include celebration of the life itself, the power of the human spirit and victory over the pandemic. He details how normal individuals make masks for people fighting on the front lines, how more and more people are getting discharged from hospitals and how there is light at the end of this tunnel. Even if the fight against Coronavirus is still raging on, Krasinski proves that there is hope by spreading the good which people have done. In a world with negativity brought about by huge media sources such as CNN or ABC, Krasinski's small youtube channel has reached millions in giving them hope to continue the fight.

1. Should media outlets report the good news along with the negativity?

2. Have you seen negative stories on the news regarding the spread of Covid-19?

3. What have you done to maintain hope and what other sources provide more inspirational news?

  1. I believe that media outlets should report the good news along with the bad news because it gives people hope in bad times and reminds them that there is some good in what's happening right now. However, they shouldn't fill the news with all fluff pieces because if the headlines are bad news, they should report that first and foremost. Most of the stories regarding the spread of Covid-19 are negative by nature, because it's about a pandemic that is killing people. Some other sources that provide inspirational news are https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/ and https://www.positive.news/

  2. Krasinski's new youtube channel is a good idea, especially during this time of crisis, because it could helps to uplift some people who are feeling down or depressed. However, most "regular' news channels should still report all news, both good and bad, and try to provide a clear picture of what is going on in the world. Even before the pandemic, most news put out by news channels was negative in nature, because those kind of stories are more shocking and typically interesting to read. For a positive spin on the news, viewers can watch entertainment channels like late-night news shows.

  3. I believe that Krasinski's channel serves more as an uplifting and cheerful thing to add to our day, rather than a serious news outlet. That being said, other news outlets have a responsibility to tell us the news as it is, whether it is negative or positive. We have a right to know what is going on in our world. I personally love the new channel, as it brings some positivity to a world that is currently going through many hardships. It shows that amongst all of this chaos, there are still good things happening every week.

  4. I think that media outlets such as the news shouldn't report good news because in a way they show us how tense the situation is and makes it more clear that we have to stay at home. But I think that other media outlets like online articles should have good news because as said in the article good things can help give hope. To maintain hope I have stayed at home and hoped that many understand how dire the situation is and also stays home. Many on social networking also work hard to help each other and to support each other through this situation.

  5. I have seen the negative stories on the news and I think there is a place for them. However, I think that the media should include the good news along with the negative news to create balance and hope for the future as it is not a permanent crisis. I agree with the fact that the news is filled with the negative parts of the coronavirus and that it creates a bleak world to live in. This is when the positive news about the virus should start giving hope to people.

  6. I believe that it is the media's responsibility to shed light on ALL news, not just the good or bad. Thus I believe that the media should report on the good news, even during a time of crisis, in order to better inform the people stuck at home.

  7. I think that the good news is helpful, and that positivity is important to maintain amidst all of the other very negative stories and events going on during this time. However, It is essential that the media accurately reports the scope of the situation and the full truth of events, so that the most accurate knowledge is presented to the public.

  8. Although it would be great to have media outlets report on more good news alongside with the bad, I do not think that it is their responsibility to pick out what is positive and negative; they are responsible for providing/communicating accurate information to us. Most of the recent news has just overall been negative lately because of the current pandemic crisis. I personally believe that John Krasinski's new Youtube series and other positive media sources/networks are a really sweet way to shed some light on our current situation and remind everyone of the positives after being drowned in the negatives.

  9. I think that media outlets should report more of the good news rather than focus on the negative effects. However, they probably won't since mainly the bad news makes the headlines. A little bit of hope can go a long way and I believe that the media should do more to lift peoples spirits instead of spitting out scary information. I've seen countless negative stories where very young people have died from COVID-19 and more describing the lack of ventilators and the stress on essential workers. While some hope and positivity is needed, at this point in the pandemic it is expected to have bad news and that's ultimately whats going to be reported on.

  10. Of course the media should report the good news, they have an immense amount of power with millions of people trusting them. They should not only be reporting the good news or the bad news, but all of the news. I have seen negative stories on the news regarding the spread of Covid-19, it is impossible to escape at this point.

  11. I think that it is important for the media to report both positive and negative news regarding the Coronavirus. Reporting only one side of the news would not only hide the full story but it would also spread incomplete information. Although it is easier to read and take in good news, the bad news is also a reality we must face.

  12. While I do think the news should be sharing positive news to keep people's spirits up, they also have a responsibility to ensure their watchers are fully informed, regardless of how demoralizing the information might be. However, an overt focus on only positive news or only negative news are both harmful - one could seriously demoralize watchers, while the other could leave watchers oblivious and ignorant. Furthermore, if watchers are not fully aware of the severity and danger of a situation, they may be more inclined to make reckless or unwise decisions that put everyone at risk.

  13. i think media outlets should report good news more often because i think everyone is sort of tired of hearing about news on COVID-19. Reporting good news can take peoples mind off of the pandemic.

  14. I understand that the media would want to portray more news about COVID-19 because its a huge issue that everyone all over the world is talking about. This would make more people interested in the channel, because bad news usually grabs more attention, and people like to stay aware. However, news about COVID-19 have been all over every news channel, which can be very demoralizing as people are only reminded of the danger they face everyday. Some positive news should be reported along with the bad news, and I think that's what makes Krasinski's new outlet so comforting for people to listen to. It spreads positivity and hope to people that are brought down by the news of the pandemic.

  15. Mainstream media should without a doubt report news both bad and good without any bias so the public is well informed and safe. And yes there is a large amount of negative news going around that the public needs to know about in order to be as well informed as possible. Hopefully though people don't take all their news from one source as there are some news outlets who are either twisting information to make it more eye catching or trying to downplay the negativity as much as possible. As to what John Krasinski is doing, it is extremely uplifting and good-hearted which is something a lot of people need right now and it deserves a lot of recognition.

  16. As information providers, the News should report all news, both bad and good, in order to give an unbiased and full telling of what's happening around the world due to the pandemic and in general. There is a lot of news, mainly negative, about the corona virus on all social media outlets and in the news, but I try not to focus on it because I can't do anything about it, so why worry. I think the virus is bad but that people are blowing it out of proportion and making a bigger panic about it than need be. For example, the coronavirus crazies that continue to stockpile resources without considering that there are other people in the country who need to buy food for their families or the thousands of people on welfare who get the scraps of whatever is left. One thing I've done to maintain hope is to turn to my religion and writing to comfort me and any others who I let read my writing. I think it is important to stay positive but logical about these situations.

  17. In response to question one, I agree with other commenters that news outlets and the media needs to report both positive and negative news. This keeps the public educated about important issues while encouraging morale with positive messages and stories. I think Krasinski's channel spreads hope, something that is extremely necessary right now. When it comes to COVID-19, news outlets and the media are sharing article after article of the details of the pandemic (death tolls, etc). I think that while depressing, these news sources are doing the right thing in reporting the truth.

  18. All across the world there is news about how bad the Corona Virus is. I believe that the news should have all kinds of news in order to help people to stay positive. This can help to spread positivity not just fear and distress. I have been able to stay busy by watching TV, not listening to all the news, and to get exercise.

  19. I believe that although being informed negative news spreads imperative awareness, good news should also be informed. Mixing both positive and negative news allows one to maintain hope in fragile times, but also raising awareness of society's actions. News channels often emphasize negative news in hopes of spreading awareness, but in doing so it may leave one without any hope and thus not wanting to be informed of any news at all. On the other hand, good news allows one to believe that there is still beauty in this world and that in times of crisis, some individuals are uniting during these times. I have maintained hope by using this time to learn new skills and keeping in contact with friends.

  20. I think that the media should report both the positive and negative news. Negative news raises awareness and informs us about the virus, which is important. It also gives us a sort of warning of why we should stay home instead of being out. However, good news brings us hope and positivity, which is especially needed during these hard times.

  21. I think that both the positive and negative should be reported but especially the positive. Of course people should understand that what is happening is very serious but when people jump to conclusions and assume things in the media it causes more panic which is not what we need right now.

  22. I believe it is very important for news to provide positive and negative information on the news. People should be given the right to be informed during all times. However, given these very negative times I understand how negative after negative news can take a toll on a person's mentality. I have seen negative stories regarding Covid-19's impact on society. Just recently I watched a very interesting video in relation to how this epidemic has impacted the restaurant industry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuIXlym9cZQ. I suggest everyone give that video a watch.

  23. It should be quite important for media sources to report both good and bad news, as this both provides hope for those watching, but also gives a healthy contrast, demonstrating that there IS hope, and although bad news is what we hear the most, good news is also present. Besides channels like these, it is always good news to hear all of the good that individuals can do and the impact they have, from printing masks with their own 3D printers, to drawing sidewalk chalk to brighten people's days, or really any small thing that can make a big difference in someone's day. Together, with these small positives, we can make it through this pandemic.

  24. I think it is crucial that media sources report on both good and bad news. It allows the audience to not feel depressed about the current health crisis and it can also acknowledge the stories of heroism and bravery. I have seen countless amounts of negative stories from the Covid-19 crisis and have seen a far fewer amount of positive stories. In order to stay positive, I look towards the bright side of things and often refrain from watching the news a whole lot and watch YouTube and Netflix.

  25. It is definitely important to report good news along with negative news. People will feel much better when they hear good news. Negative news can only cause people to be more stressed. However it is still important to report negative news so that people know what's going on and can prepare for it. I have seen some negative news about Covid-19 like the # of deaths and stuff related to that. Some Good News has definitely helped me maintain hope and I've just been doing many things to keep me busy and not constantly worried on the situation we're currently in.

  26. I think it is important to report on the good news as well as the bad news because it can give people hope or something to be happy about. With all the negativity going on in the world right now, reporting on the positive occurrences is a nice break.

  27. Media outlets should report some good news along with the negativity, because people (including myself) could get consumed by a sense of hopelessness and stress about the world. I have been watching John Krasinski's SGN channel for the last few weeks now, and it's definitely brought some inspiration and light-heartedness into my mental state.

  28. This is a great idea because it reminds people that although we are going through some of the toughest times of our lives, we need to stay positive as there are many good things happening around the world. This Youtube channel acts as an escape to whats going on in the world and it serves as an inspiration to others who are feeling hopeless.

  29. In order to keep myself sane I've tried to keep myself busy and postive. Throughout the first few weeks, I really enjoyed being at home with my family, but quickly became overwhelmed by the situation. At a certain point, I realized that I had become too negative and accepting of my inability to see others. In the last few weeks, I've maintained a better outlook on the pandemic, seeing it as an opportunity to do what I love to do. In addition, I have kept myself disciplined which has alleviated a lot of stress (and brought a little).

  30. I think the media outlets should report the full truth but try to keep it more positive than negative. I have seen many negative stories such as losses of people. I have started to get more exercise and watch stuff that I enjoy.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think that it is the news outlets duty to report on the facts. Updates on the Corona Virus are very informational and helpful, but it is always nice to hear about something good too. I just think that they can't sacrifice breaking news about facts in exchange for a fluff piece on the goodness of the human soul.I have seen a lot of news about how Corona Virus continues to kill people and spread. I think it is good to know what is happening and where though. I haven't done anything to keep hope because I don't need hope. I hope for the people whose lives are being taken and their families, but I think that there is nothing really for me to hope for for myself or my family.
